Ishmael Beah- Ishmael is both the protagonist and the antagonist of the story. He is a dynamic character because he goes from a harmless boy to a child soldier. Ishmael then goes through a tough transition back to a normal life.

Theme
The main message to take away from this story is that no matter what a person has gone through, they can also be rehabilitated.
Point of View
1st Person Limited. Ishmael is not able to know what other people are thinking. He also cannot describe events he did no witness.
Plot Map
January 1993- Ishmael and his brother learn that their hometown of Mogbwemo was attacked by the rebels.
February 1993- Mattru Jong is attacked by the rebels.
Late 1995- Ishmael and his friends are trained by the government soldiers. They are then sent into battle.
Mid 1996- Ishmael and some of his friends are chosen to attend a rehabilitation center in the Sierra Leone capital of Freetown.
Early 1997- Ishmael is adopted by his uncle. He also gets nominated to speak at the UN Council in New York City.
May 1997- Freetown is attacked by the rebels and the government soldiers. Ishmael decides to escape the city. He travels to the neighbouring country of
