This shows that he used to be normal boy throughout his elementary school years and he had lowered his self-image due to the constant bullying in highschool and depression against his name, which he claims as ‘Ishmael Leseur’s Syndrome’.
However, relating to the theme ‘importance of friendship’, Ishmael overcame Barry’s bullying and increased his self-image with the support and advice of his friends.

Individuality is the strengths and weaknesses of each character and how they are accepted in their surroundings, Every character in the book has their own individuality but are accepted differently by others. Again, the three main characters - Scobie, Ishmael and Barry are the perfect example of the theme ‘individuality’ in the novel.
Scobie has his strengths as an individual and could strengthen others too. Scobie’s main strength is that he doesn’t feel fear, or more precisely, he doesn’t think anything else after his surgery is worth to fear. This allows him to speak publicly with ease and he also stands up against Barry. Along with having no fear, Scobie is also exceptional in all school subjects, specially in English.
There is not figure of Scobie’s weakness since he is really confident and has a good self-esteem. He is very resilient and will sort out issues, such as bullying without the use of violence. Scobie’s only persumable weakness is the literal comeback of his brain tumour, which is very unlikely but he still has to take tests occasionally to make sure the tumour hasn’t

11/25 I stopped my reading for one day to relax my mind; I was unconsciously effected by the war Ishmael was in. I detested the rebel who killed his family, friends, and country. The war between the government and the rebels ruined the citizens peaceful lives. Families were separated, and children were brought to fright against their friend in different sides. This book starts off by discussing captivity, Ishmaels captivity, the takers captivity in their own culture, and way of thinking. Ishmael teaches the author about captivity through his own experience in the zoo and circus. Ishmael never says that he feels resentful about his captors, and he furthers the discussion about captivity by discussing mother culture, and how this culture holds people captive (36). Luckily, we have literature to teach us about identity, and it’s important for authors to reveal identity effectively. For instance, effective writers use other’s reactions to the character, their experiences, and their environment to reveal who a character is.…

Figurative language helps bring out every character’s individual traits and personality. In Don’t Call Me Ishmael by Michael Gerard Bauer, it is clear that Ishmael’s low self-esteem and James Scobie’s debating skills are constantly emphasized by Bauer’s use of similes and metaphors. The author uses figurative language to develop Ishmael’s alarmingly low self-esteem, together with James Scobie’s dazzling debating skills.
