In chapter 5 of Ishmael the quote gets more loaded. Ishmael induces narrator to see ‘Takers’ as screw ups. In a way the quote and subsequent narrative can only result in one outcome. Mankind’s flawed nature requires prophets to tell everybody how to live, as nobody knows. Ishmael’s inferences caused narrator to realise lacking this knowledge is the sole cause of mankind’s screw-ups. The chapter has sort of an open end because Ishmael only makes an offside remark that tomorrow the narrator might learn new ways to look at things. suggesting we do know how to live but prefer prophets telling us, as we’ve somebody to blame for out mistakes and Ishmael only makes an offside remark that tomorrow the narrator might learn new ways to look at things.

“Men go to far greater lengths to avoid what they fear than to obtain what they desire.” ~ Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code In The Odyssey, Homer utilizes characterization to validate that fear is often the root of temptation. For example he states, “I will not share your bed unless you swear the mighty oath, o goddess – to insure that you’ll forgo any thoughts of further plots.” (Homer 10.342-344) Odysseus is normally a good man but, like many men, he fears the Gods. He gives into Círcë’s charms like Hermes said he should in fear of being struck down by Athena, or being captured by Circe and having to go without Athena…

In the reading, I find it interesting a few of the points the father made, in which we can relate to today as well. In the first paragraph there is relevant information we live by today such as when the Akkadian Father brings up “maintain justice for your enemy, be friendly to your enemy.” Many of us know the saying keep your friends close and your enemies closer. I suspect he is conveying the same message some believe in today, to teach his son the enemies will be unsure of the intensions being formulated furtively of them. Deceive the opposing side into assuming the son will mean no harm, however, he soon may retaliate when they least expect it.…

The theme of identity in the book also ties into the theme of captivity, identities that are forced upon people can lead people to try to fit into these identities, which in turn makes these people captives because they can not form their own identities. Evolution is another theme which is discussed throughout the book. Ishmael says that evolution has stopped because of the actions that humanity has taken. Ishmael says that the takers have halted their own evolution because they are not in the hands of nature and the natural processes of the earth.…

In relation to questioning the past, the stories uncover the inability to rely on memories. Notably, there is a blurring of fact from fiction when often the characters and sometimes even the reader doesn’t know what really occurred or is the truth. This is pointed out by Austerlitz’s teacher when he mentions: it would take an endless length of time to describe the events of such a day properly[...] [a]ll of us, even when we think we have noted every tiny detail, resort to set pieces which have already been staged often enough by others.
