In explaining the old man's comment about being like the moon, Ishmael's grandmother notes that although people are often bothered by the bright light of the sun, few people ever complain about the moonlight. She tells him that good things happen under the light of the moon. Ishmael later comes to see the moon as a source of solace that provides him with encouragement.

They took them back to Yele as civilians. They lived there for a while peacefully. Then all of a sudden the rebels started to surround the village and the soldiers were being killed too quickly. So the lieutenant told all the boys that if they didn’t help fight the rebels then they were no longer welcome in the village. So Ishmael and his friends had no choice but to fight in the war. The lieutenant started giving them drugs and telling him to kill the rebels because they killed your family. So they started to get angrier and fearless because of the drugs and brainwashing. Then when they went to there first battle and two of Ishmaels friends died then he because traumatized and became a different person. The white tablets are drugs that give the boys more energy. They are handed out so that the boys will do what they are told without questioning it.
When the soldiers are not on a mission they watch war movies and do drugs. They like to watch Rambo and Commando movies to teach them how to fight in battle and kill prisoners. In there spare time they would go on random raids and take over villages killing all civilians for food, ammo, or drugs. No I believe they are just as bad as the rebels. They kill villages of people for no reason at all other then for their comfort, or addiction. Ishmael is promoted because he killed his rebel prisoner with his bayonet the
