A tessellation of a flat surface is the tiling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. In mathematics, tessellations can be generalized to higher dimensions and a variety of geometries. A periodic tiling has a repeating pattern. Tessellations have several historical and geographical connections. In Isfahan, Iran there are examples of mosaic tilework and tilework incorporating calligraphy within their architecture. In Spain and Islamic architecture in the Middle East have interesting historical connections. Because of the strict injunctions against such depictions of humans or animals which might result in idol-worship, Islamic art developed a unique character, utilizing a number of geometric tessellations within them.
