Isak Pedersen: A Short Story

Isak Pedersen was a nerdy kid that went to Otter Middle School. He had no friends except for his “Bro” Daniel Fredrickson. Daniel was always came to school in his famous white van. Isak always relied on Daniel to get him everywhere because Isak did not have a car. Everyone in town new Daniel’s white van for it’s deafening sound as he drove down the streets.
¨Daniel, Daniel. Back at it again with the white van,¨ His grandma, Grams, would say. Grams and his grandpa, Pops, lived in the town closest next to where Isak lived in southeastern Wisconsin. This would be Isak’s Senior year. He hadn’t read anything all summer and knew that they would test him in the first week of school. He looked over to his left and saw the book. He tried with all his might to hold in the tears. Then it came out. His grandma died two-weeks after the boat ride. He loved her so much. He cried for 20 minutes before his mom knocked on his door. “Isak, can I come in?” his mom asked. “Sure” Isak sobbed. “What’s wrong?” Isak looked up from the book “Grams gave me this book on the last boat ride we went on together.” “Oh, sorry sweety. Well lunch is ready when you want to eat.” Isak stayed in his bedroom for 5 minutes then went out and saw the soup, now cold, in the middle of their oak wood table.
After Lunch he went back to his room and started reading and taking notes. Considered one of most damaging of the invasive species introduced to this country, zebra mussels were transported to the Great Lakes in ballast water from a transoceanic vessel, originally found in Russia… The most interesting fact he found was that It is almost impossible to stop them from reproducing, as female zebra mussels can produce 100,000 to 500,000 eggs per year. Daniel grabbed his dad’s car keys and Isak and Daniel took off. They parked at the memorial and took out the suitcase with the serum. They jumped the fence and got to the pier. It was late and very dark. Daniel hooked up the serum to the water gun and let Isak walk out on the pier. Isak got to the end of the pier and whispered to himself This is for you grams. I love you. Then he got ready and through the gun in the water is splashed and the started going with the current. Good. Then a wave came down the river and hit the water gun. The tube with the serum connected to the gun started spinning out really fast. CAPLOOSH. The next thing Isak new was that he was in the St. Lawrence River. Floating away from land, his friend, and his life. He tried to swim against the current but it wouldn’t work. He felt the serum tube in a knot on his leg. It was to dark to see anything, even any land. He pulled on the serum tube till he got to the water
