When the Germans came to Poland Isak left his family and fled to Russia. While he was there he worked as a carpenter. When Hitler finally invaded Russia, Isak enlisted in the Russian army to escape the immediate threat of being departed. Before his army could fight they were captured by the Germans. He was stationed in Kremenchung, Ukraine when the Nazi’s captured him and his entire troop. They were sent to a Prisoner of War camp, but Isak escaped while marching. He changed his Jewish name, Borenstein, to a polish name, Broniewski. When he ran away to town which meant “five houses” he worked at a nearby hospital for bread and soup.
