Every year, I start my English 10 Accelerated class with joy and intrigue. I am always curious to see which students will stand out. Initially, Isaiah Charles stood out, but for the wrong reasons. There were concerns after initial conversations with him. Isaiah Charles had seemed to be a young man that seemed rigid and fixed in his understanding of the world. I saw a young man who felt entitled, as though he naturally deserved everything he desired. However, let me be the first to tell you how much my outlook and perspective of Isaiah Charles has changed immensely. While he strove to receive an “A” in my course, this was not his only goal. He wanted to learn. Isaiah is naturally curious, meaning, he is not afraid to ask questions or spend extra time after school, understanding lectures and their application in real life. Isaiah is a mature learner, and with his affable and genial personality, is able to inspire members of his class to be intrigued and hold themselves to his standard of participation and interest level in our class.
