Fortunato had never truly disappeared from his thoughts; he was always niggling in the back of his brain like the rat he had been in life. Nevertheless, he can’t quite pinpoint what it was about today that made Montresor set his mind on descending into the catacombs. It had been exactly two weeks, true, but this was not a noteworthy anniversary.
