Isabella of Portugal was born in 1428 into a notable family. Her father was John, Constable of Portugal and he was the youngest surviving son of John I of Portugal. Her mother was Isabella of Barcelos and she was the first daughter of the first Duke of Braganza. Her mother’s father was an illegitimate child of John I of Portugal. This relationship caused Isabella of Barcelos to be half-niece to her own husband. Being of a royal descendant, her role was to be married off to another country’s royalty to create a tradeship between the two. She was to be married to John II of Castile on July 22, 1447. He was 42 at this time and she was only 19. Isabella would be his second wife, following behind Mary of Aragon. They had two children together: …show more content…
He was only three years older than his step-mother. He was definitely scared of Isabella, so he moved them to the Castle of Arévalo. While her and her two children resided here, she taught the oldest (Isabella) everything: literature, multiple languages, military, history, math, etc… Her daughter was even smarter than she was.
Though she was away from the city, she began to plan a way to let her daughter rise to the throne. She explained to her priests about why Spain needed her. The only issue was is that, her son Alfonso would be the next male in line to lead. He was the next choice.
Alfonso mysteriously died on July 5, 1468 at the young age of 14. No one knows how he died or if it was premeditated by his mother. The world shall never know. This did clear the path for her daughter to rise to the throne and she exactly did. Once she reached the throne after the death of Henry IV of Castile, she did visit her mother.
It was not until 1496, that she heard of her mother’s short time left, that she decided to go and see her. Her mother was in distraught. She did not recognize her own daughter. She died on August 15, 1496 and was buried in the Miraflores Charterhouse with her husband and
