Isaac Allerton The Mayflower Summary

My Mayflower ancestor is Isaac Allerton who was written to be a “proper saint,” meaning that he was a Leyden Separatist. He was a tailor in London at the time of his departure on the Mayflower. There are conflicting reports of Allerton’s age when he came over to the new world, which range from age 34 to 37. He boarded the Mayflower with his wife Mary, their three children, and his tailor apprentice, John Hooke.
The individuals on the Mayflower were mostly farmers with limited resources to finance such a trip. They received funding from a group of London stockholders who agreed to finance their voyage in exchange for a share the profits in the new world. After the death of the Governor John Carver one year after arriving in the new world, Allerton’s

Allerton even went so far as to purchase ships on behalf of the colony and negotiate patents and grants. When some of these negotiations failed, it drove the colony further into debt. It was also discovered that Allerton set himself up as competitor with the colony at several of the trading posts, one along the Kennebec River and one in Castine, Maine. One of the most interesting facts about my ancestor is the fact that he set up another competitive trading post in Machiasport, five minutes from where I currently reside. Our area is so rich in history due to Machias playing such a major role in the American Revolutionary War, but I have never heard any mention of the pilgrims setting up a trading post in this area. In fact, in reviewing the history of the town of Machiasport and visiting their local museum, the trading post is never given more than a one sentence credit, which I find extremely disappointing.
As a result of Allerton’s business practices, he was replaced in his position and eventually left the colony. Although he ended up leaving, Allerton definitely prospered by coming to the new world. Like most of the others aboard the Mayflower, Allerton was ambitious and sought out new opportunities. He used this ambition and combined it with the knowledge and experience from his work in trade

In Nathaniel Philbrick’s narrative Mayflower, he tells the story of the struggle and hardships of a group of people who cross the ocean to find personal and religious freedom in a new land. These people are the Pilgrims, but they are much different from the stereotypical pilgrims that we think of today. Philbrick tells the story of the Pilgrims struggle to survive in their first few months, their first meetings with and the rise and eventual fall of the alliance between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims. I found the book to be very interesting when I read it, and though it was boring or slow at times, it provided a great deal of intriguing information that I never knew before about the story of the Pilgrims and their long, treacherous…

One of the first settlements in America, led by John White, is the lost colony of Roanoke that suddenly vanished in 1587. After John White went back to England for supplies, and was delayed, he left the settlers on Roanoke Island; only to find them missing afterwards in 1590 (“Wolfe”). This led him to finding clues through Roanoke Island, North Carolina, in order to find the colonists; including his family and granddaughter. Even over centuries of looking for them we are still persistent on any leads towards it. Even before the Puritans made their voyage to the “New World” or what we know it as North America, they had to deal with the hardships that are hardly talked about when it comes to the “Puritan Pilgrimage”. As the dictionary of Merriam-Webster states “The Puritans were a group religious members who were apart of a Protestant group, these members follow strict rules and believe that pleasure is wrong” In the early years of 1608, the town of Scrooby which had a group of Puritan separatists, migrated to the Netherlands from England to avoid persecution from the “Millenary Petition” that was made in 1604 by King James the First. After 12 years pass and the year 1620 rolls around the group of Puritan separatists from the town of Scrooby return to England and board the Mayflower hoping to find and pursue a new life in the “New World” while not even knowing what…

Just a few lots to the west of the two Jennings’ farm was the Pelham branch of the Quaker’s the oldest such branch in Canada. The Friends, as they call their members settled in the Niagara region in 1786 many from New Jersey in Sussex County, the same county in which Hannah was born. As Quaker’s they disavowed anything to do with violence and hence took no active part in the Revolutionary War. This stance of neutrality had members suffer double taxation and the loss of some civil rights – and not just during the war, for many sanctions continued after the war as well. Many Friends could see the advantage of moving north and, not only did so many do so, the Quakers helped many British fugitives leave New Jersey or Pennsylvania for Niagara.…

As men and women made the long, harrowing journey across the Atlantic to the unknown, unwelcoming lands of the New World, religion to many of these pioneers was the only means to find comfort and hope amid battering waves and wicked cases of seasickness. William Bradford and John Smith were no different: religion was their guiding light, both consciously and subconsciously, in their settling of the New World. Despite the differences in Bradford and Smith’s approaches to recounting their histories of settling, both Bradford and Smith demonstrate through their prose and dealings with the Native peoples that religion was the most important aspect in all of their decisions; and in turn illuminate religion to be of the greatest values of European…

Nathaniel Philbrick’s Mayflower follows the journey of the Pilgrims as the venture to the New World and create a destructive trail, leading to war with Native Americans. As in any story, especially one involving war, there are two sides, and Philbrick makes it clear what side he fights for.…
