Are living things a product of nature or nurture? White Fang is a product of nurture due to many reasons. If he was a product of nature, he would have remained true to his heritage and stayed wild. From the beginning of his life, he was nurtured into an evil soul. The cause of this is from the puppies around him and his first owner. Of course, he was not born like that; he was born an innocent puppy whose only purpose was to learn. Soon he learned to obey the law of man and nature, he also learned to defend himself by attacking others so that survival was to his advantage. All of these lessons were taught from the nurturing White Fang received. Throughout the book, he changes from aggressive and solitary, to extremely vicious, and finally to loving and protective. All of these changing personalities depends on the one who nurtures White Fang at the time; his masters. While White Fang was now a being of love toward his master, the effects of Gray Beaver and Beauty Smith’s nurture were still evident. He always fought to kill and would never trust nor obey another man. All of the kinds of nurture he had experienced throughout his life would never leave him. White Fang was smart and could choose what he wanted to do, but he could not change his environment and how he was changed. This shows that no matter how smart or strong a being is they cannot control how they are influenced and how much this affects them. White Fang was born a wolf, some would say nature created him to be part of a pack to hunt, but the nurture he received led him to become domestic and loyal to his master. The nurture a living thing receives affects it dramatically no matter what it was born
