Is Walmart Good For America Summary

The Transformation of Cooperate Control by Fligstien is very interesting to say the least. He argues a different position than many economists would argue. Many economists would suggest that the economy works on its own, and that it is not controlled by anything. However, Fligstien suggests that political and social processes, for example government entities and institutions, control the economy. The social and political process involves three different contexts organizational fields, state, and the organization. He ends by highlighting that the way of seeing the economy is up to the individual who can persuade an individual to see it in their eyes. These elements were seen in the “Is Wal-Mart Good for America”, in the documentary, it explores the rise of Wal-Mart, but more importantly the relationship between department stores like Wal-Mart (and Wal-Mart itself) and manufactures. Americans want cheap consumer goods that will save them money, however they must trade off and face losing jobs to China. The most important thing that has made Wal-Mart successful is their deep and complex relationship with China; China can pay its workers a fraction of what the American worker would accept, or that is even legal to pay in the United States. This means that Wal-Mart can save money by getting products made in China, and they can pass these savings on to the consumer. This means that though Americans will get cheaper products, saving them money, they will lose money because they won’t have high paying jobs. They tradeoff “good work” for “cheap products”, this argument is interesting to consider because it ties back into the theme of the documentary, of whether Wal-Mart is hurting America, which is still
