In premature babies one of the biggest killers is lack of lung development. As a baby grows and develops so do it’s lungs, and the lungs are one of the last things to develop. A condition known as RDS or Respiratory Distress Syndrome is the main illness seen involving the lungs of premature neonates. Lungs are essentially giant fleshy air bags, and inside of these bags is a system of smaller bags and tubes connecting them. A substance called surfactant is what coats the inside of these smaller bags so they don’t stick together, and in neonates this substance often is not in enough quantity to allow for adequate lung function.
