A Hero
Heroes and heroines have often been stereotyped by heroes such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, etc. If these beings are not real heroes, then what is a true hero? A hero is someone you can rely on, someone you can trust. Theseus is an example of a true hero, with his past in the Greek myth, “ Theseus and the Minotaur”. Then why is Theseus a hero? A reason why Theseus is a hero is because he volunteered as tribute to sacrifice himself to the Minotaur, though he vowed to his father he would return because he would kill the vile creature. In the text “ What is Heroism,” it states, “... heroism involves some type of quest, which may range the preservation of life to the preservation of an ideal.” This connects to Theseus because he enlisted on a quest for the preservation of life, the life of his father’s people. By doing this his life could end abruptly. In the article “Theseus and the Minotaur,” it says,” … I vow that it is the last time the Minotaur will be fed with the flesh of any of our people.” This proves Theseus is a hero because he was willing to sacrifice himself

In the article “ What is Heroism,” it says,”Social heroism is costly in its way, often involving loss of credibility or financial stability, lowered social status, arrest torture risks to family, and, in some cases, death.” This relates to Theseus he quests out to find himself stuck in a situation he he faces with confidence and with stability. In the text “ Theseus and the Minotaur,” it states,” I am Theseus, Prince of Athens and I do not fear what is within the walls of your maze.” This proves Theseus is a hero because he outright insulted King Minos, the owner of the Minotaur. Because Minos and King Aegeus were on the verge of war, the outburst Theseus admitted could’ve drawn the last straw, aw well as being flogged or punished for his outburst as

The author of ‘The Hero’s Test’ shows the heroic qualities of the main character, Theseus, quite clearly if you pay attention. Alisoun Witting, the author, have written examples of how Theseus is a hero, like courage, cunning, selfless, perseverance, determination, and even sacrifices at some point and many more. In the first to second paragraph Theseus already shows traits of being a hero right off the bat, the text states that ‘Theseus was puzzled: what was the cause of this public sorrow? ’ This one sentence alone shows that he cared about his people, and also shows that he was determined to find out what exactly made them sorrowful. The second form of text evidence is a few paragraphs ahead and is an example of sacrifice and courage.…

He was exiled from his city and was murdered by King Lycomedes, his friend, and his host. Anyone who is successful in completing a gallant and courageous act, can be considered a hero. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is an admirable hero because he uses strategy instead of strength to overcome several obstacles. Homer presents this in Odysseus’s use of deception, the route he chooses to get home, his choice of words and his use of disguises. To overcome a hurdle one may wish for a great deal of strength. Yet when Odysseus came in contact with a giant Cyclops, he never questioned nor focused on his lack of vitality.…

Is Odysseus Really A Hero? How could you call “The Great Odysseus” a hero? This man was hated by many gods, he cheated on his wife, he was cocky, and a murderer. Odysseus was hated by the gods; it was pretty clear to me when that they hated him because of the constant obstacles place in front of him. While leaving Calypso’s island, “his raft is destroyed in a storm and is thrown to the shores of the Phaeacians(P.51)”.…

Even in his youth, Theseus’ story takes a giant leap ahead of Perseus’ based on his heroic first call to adventure. King Aegus, Theseus’ father, knew before he was born that he was going to lead on greatness, so his father hid weapons for Theseus to claim upon his manhood to seek out his father in the vast and dangerous lands surrounding Theseus. “[Father Aegus] did this without the knowledge of his wife and told her that whenever the boy -if it was a boy- grew strong enough to roll away the stone and get the things beneath it, she could send him to Athens to claim him as his father”(Hamilton 210). Theseus is proving to be a stronger boy while becoming of age, being given a quest at the turn of his manhood, while Perseus had waited until his opportunity arrived with his mother, and King Polydectes, who wanted to marry his mother, Danaë. Theseus defeats his enemy, the Minotaur, while defeating the Labyrinth, therefore choosing more of a fight than Perseus, since Perseus had help from the Gods.…

In both cases – with both Theseus striking down the Minotaur and with the Athenians sentencing to death Socrates – those committing the lethal action likely think that they are maligning the object of their action. This is clear in the case of Socrates, evidenced by the vast majority of the Phaedo consisting of Socrates trying to convince his companions that he is not being harmed, and it is reasonable to think – based on analysis of the mythology of Theseus’ life – that Theseus does not believe he is doing a service to the Minotaur by killing it. He, rather, is killing it for the benefit of Athens and, as he is a tribute, himself. Further, in both cases, the creature eventually…
