After Innocent, Deo’s brother, dies he doesn't know what to do. Deo starts living on the street and not taking care of himself. He finds a soccer team to play on and his life is finally getting better. They join the World Cup and while he is playing he imagines his family cheering for him. In the text it states, “I imagine I see Amai and Grandpa Longdrop in the crowd, watching and waving at me… ‘We will win this game!” (Williams 228). This proves that after he sees his family in the crowd he is more confident. He knows that their team can win the game because he gets hope and determination form thinking about his family. Deo mentions that even though Innocent isn’t with him, he is still in his heart. He wants to win the game for his family because he knows somehow they are watching him; he wants them to be proud. Just like Chiko, Deo has a picture of his father which keeps him hopeful. He looks at the picture, and thinks about his father. Deo and Innocent both want to see him, and that is what keeps him going during his journey into South Africa. For example, the author writes, “Innocent takes out the photograph he showed me under the baobab tree… ‘Yes,’ I say and hand him back the photograph. ‘We’re going to see him in South Africa” (Williams 56). This shows how Deo gets hope from the picture of his father. The fact that he is …show more content…
In both books, the characters think about their families while they are going through struggles. For example, Chiko keeps pictures of his father to look at when he feels like he can’t keep going. The thought of his father gives him motivation because he knows that he has to get back and help his family. In the same book, Tai is always trying to escape and stay alive because he needs to protect his sister, who was separated from him. Also, Deo relies on memories of his family after they died. Thinking about them makes him feel confident because he knows what his mom and grandfather would want him to do. He wants to do what would make them proud, and when he thinks about them and the fact that he has to take care of Innocent he gains hope that there are ways to survive. People everywhere have memories of their family, and just like the characters did, they use these memories to give them strength during hard

Without Papi it seems as though the family would be extremely dysfunctional. However, Aparicio comes to notice that even though Papi is high up in the hierarchy of the family Ama is still the one making decisions for the family. Papi has to “give her what she wants whenever she asks for it so that my papi can still be her son” (53). Aparicio develops a sense of discomfort throughout this quote by expressing the fact that Ama is a hard woman to please and since she is the top of the hierarchy structure if Ama is not please she may ban you from the family. Aparicio expresses the feeling that she doesn’t have her grandmother’s approval because she is not the first and the bravest like her father when she says “Ama is waiting for me to get sick and run into the house” (53).…

This is ironic, because ideally, a person would think that right before someone is dying they would think of there family since they have created a lot of memories together, but in this case he remembers something irrelevant to his adult life. Wolff uses repetition to show that he does not recall his family during his death process. The repetition of the phrase “he did not remember” proves that ideally, an individual dying would be thinking of the precious moments with their family, but this shows that that does not have to be the case in every person's death (Wolff, 204). Him “not [remembering]” shows that his priority in life was to criticise, but in a way something that he loved led him to his death (Wolff, 204). But another reason for him not remembering his because the bullet could have his hippocampal region on the brain thus leading to him forgetting about his loved ones (Scoville).…
