After performing a close reading of the given passage, in this essay I will discuss the ways in which the passage helps to interpret the text it has been taken from. I will do this using the following headings, in relation to the passage and then referring to the text as a whole, and how they relate; theme, style, language, tone and imagery, characters and symbols. The passage has been taken from Edgar Allan Poe’s work, “The Tell-Tale Heart”. From my reading of the above passage, it is clear to me that the theme is of both insanity and murder. This reflects the main text well, as it mirrors the same themes.…

However, despite its given distinction of characters, settings, gender, and action, both are dually intertwined in regards to the nature each narrative and plot takes. The Tell-Tale Heart illustrates and manifests itself with a distinct narrator with a kind of “split nature”, a man who can perhaps be described as suffering from an intense form of paranoia, while the latter denoting an exacerbation of a mental condition and ultimately concluding with a paradoxical and freeing insanity, yet despite such unintended respite, both alike through the…

The narrator of the short story, “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, is seen by the reader to be insane. This is assumed throughout the story and even at the very beginning due to the narrators over-use of persuasion towards the reader that he is not mad. The narrator is seen as being crazy or, more and more insane, as the story continues on. Evidence of this madness is shown in many different situations, and also is shown through the narrator’s thoughts during certain parts of the story. The narrator claims later in the story that there are reasons behind the actions that he decides to take.…

Edgar Allen Poe captivated everyone with the short story The Tell-Tale Heart, which forced readers to questions one's mental state, deciding on whether someone is guilty or innocent, whether someone is conscious of their actions, or if they are sane or criminally insane. The Tell-Tale Heart is the perfect example of the argument of whether an individual is aware of their actions and the crimes they commit or if they are possessed and driven to commit crimes by something in their mind, in which they could possibly use an insanity plea during their trial if they are caught. The narrator, who Edgar Allen Poe portrays as insane, is not, and during this essay, I will outline examples as to why he is not and that he is fully aware of the crimes that he is committing. The first example as to his premeditation is how he is explaining the story to the audience.…

Last Stop on Market Street is an award winning picture book about a little black boy called CJ and his grandmother who take the bus to work at a soup kitchen after church on Sundays. The author uses words and phrases very effectively within this book to really paint a picture of the city and it's people. At the beginning of this book the author uses figurative language to describe the air as smelling 'like freedom, but it also smelled like rain' this phrase goes a long way in identifying the setting as being beautiful and open, in addition, it also indicates the rain had just begun (Tunnell, 2015, p.18). Another example of the author using a phrase to tell the reader a lot of information is when CJ's Nana tells CJ that the tree's are drinking through a straw. CJ is aid to look for some time for a straw to no avail, the author uses this short passage to tell us that CJ is young and…

One example in particular that stands out is when the narrator accidently wakes the old man, and says, “For a whole hour I did not move a muscle, and I did not hear him lay down. He was still sitting-up; listening” (Poe105). This quote proves the killer to be very attentive.…
