These antithetical traits manifest through conflicting directions by two compelling desires, ambitions, or influences. In the story Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll finds himself at crossroads as he has to decide between being a respectable man or continuing his frivolous and indecent behavior. Ultimately, he figures out how his two contradictory traits can coexist: by creating his alter ego, Mr. Hyde. Since Dr. Jekyll is driven by two opposite desires, he attempts to achieve respect and a happy life without the constant guilt of his immoral actions. In doing so, he tries to purify and separate his good and evil natures, thus creating an evil Dr. Hyde. Ultimately, the evil in Mr. Hyde eventually conquers the Dr. Jekyll’s good nature. This shows that once a person’s dark and evil nature is unlocked, it becomes extremely difficult to put back into place. Also, it illustrates that no matter how hard a person tries, good and evil cannot exist together. Thus, the Dr. Jekyll’s whole experiment was incorrect because he thought that his good morals and indecent personality cannot coexist. In the end, the novel reveals that in every man there is a good and evil side. These opposing traits are created by contradicting desires, ambitions, or influences.
