The nursing profession can be a rewarding experience. The idea of caring and educating patients has encouraged many individuals to pursue a nursing education. A major in nursing is very different than other majors. The classes involved have a higher grading scale and students are expected to have a knowledge basis from previous courses. Students also experience learning in simulation and clinical settings. Before entering the nursing program, aspiring students have to complete a series of pre-requisite courses such as Anatomy, Chemistry, Microbiology, etc. Once the individuals complete the pre-requisites, they are able to apply for their schools nursing program and complete the HESI, a computerized exam that tests the individual’s knowledge

In the United States, community colleges, technical schools, or nursing schools typically offer ASN degrees. (“Associate Degree,” 2015) Because of it’s short time-span and individuals’ desire to begin their nursing career immediately, more individuals are entering the ASN program than any other nursing program. The NCLEX is a computerized exam that tests the individuals’ knowledge of a safe effective care environment, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity, and physiological integrity (Finkelman & Kenner, 2016, p. 103), and is given to protect the public. Nursing programs will most likely prepare their students during their program experience. Once the student graduates from nursing school, they are able to complete the NCLEX. There are two types of examinations for the NCLEX; they are the NCLEX-RN, which is for aspiring registered nurses, and the NCLEX-PN, which is for aspiring practical nurses. The examination has between 75 and 265 questions and individual passes when the computer is 95 percent certain that their ability is above that state’s passing standard. The individual’s acceptance into their school’s nursing program is heavily based on their science and HESI scores. There are four types of nursing programs an individual can enter, which are the ASN, BSN, Master’s, and Diploma programs.
