In “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” by W.D. Wetherell, the boy is plagued by a girl named Sheila Mant. The author makes the boy extremely gullible and unwise which allows the readers of the story to understand his thoughts and regrets. The author forces the audience to feel embarrassed with the boy by explaining how he felt for Sheila by showing his interest in Sheila and the fish, and finally, by revealing that he would regret his silly decision. The Boy is plagued by Sheila.…

As I go on with the story I see that the narrator has to make a choice between the bass or Sheila, so I wonder which one? Maybe he’ll pick the bass. One reason is because he invests a lot of time in fishing. Putting a rod in the the water is described as second nature to him. Another reason is because he fished even before…
I am reading, “The Bass, the river and Sheila Mant” by W.D. Watherell. The story is about a boy who takes his summer crush on a date, but is faced with the struggle of choosing Sheila or the biggest bass he has ever hooked. In this journal I will be questioning and evaluating. While reading this short story I am left to question will the Narrator pick the bass or Shelia Mant. I believe he will pick the bass.…
The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst is a short story about a child born with a serious medical condition and he is not able to do the same things as other children. This boy tries to overcome his challenges. In the end, however, his older brother abandons him in a storm and he ends up dying. There are two main characters in this story: the narrator (the older brother) and the little brother (Doodle). These two siblings are quite fascinating as they are very different from each other but at the same time share some similarities.…
Dante Alighieri once said, “There is no greater sorrow than to recall a happy time when miserable.” Though not directly mentioned, the idea of the quote seems to be explored thoroughly in both “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For,” by Henry David Thoreau, and “Once More to the Lake,” by E.B. White. While both of these authors float around several thoughts including reality, advancements, and living in general, they take very different approaches to do so. In “Once More to the Lake,” White reminisces on his journey back to a place he spent many summers as a child. His essay takes the form of a narrative, with him explaining in great detail the beauty and isolation of the lake.…
This idea is supported by the frequented use of self-address implemented in the second half. The speaker becomes more involved. “I thought,” “I looked,” “I admired,” all produce a more active role on the part of the speaker. The turning point in the poem that triggers this alteration seems to be when the reader realizes that the fish is in fact still alive. “While his gills were breathing” (line 22) is the first action given to the fish and the first time he is addressed as a living thing.…
What points of contrast does Twain refer to between his two ways of seeing the river? Twain first refers to the river as something absolutely beautiful. Twain admires the river and appreciates all of the small details, as he describes the “broad expanse of the river; in the middle distance the red hue brightened into gold, sparkling upon the water” (1). After Twain sees the river everyday and gets used to it, he begins to not appreciate the beauty as much, as he says, “the romance and beauty were all gone from the river” (3).…
i’m reading the short story and i think he’ll pick the bass is because he has fished for his whole life and has only just now started to like this girl but what i think is what broke the camel's back is the fact she HATES fishing [how is that possible] and she doesn't even look at him for the most of the story he gets a really big bass but is trying to not reveal that he likes fishing in front of shela he trying to see if he could come back to it . this bass is HUGE it’s a trophy size his dream but he tries to get it but in the end is too late . some ways he would pick shela .…
These two fish do not realize, prior to their altercation with the older fish, that what is keeping them alive all of their lives, is the water that surrounds them. The story of the two fish was meant to draw the audience’s attention as they would not have thought they would be hearing a story of…
In “Greasy Lake” T. Coraghessan Boyle tells a story of a late night with three boys. The narrator, Digby, and Jeff headed out to Greasy Lake after a long night of going in and out of every bar in town. The narrator, who remains nameless, tells the story. The narration of this story gives the reader a certain insight to the story. In Boyle’s “Greasy Lake”, the first person narration provides insight for the reader to experience things as the narrator does.…
Elizabeth Wardle states “If we understand writing as one tool among many through which knowledge, identity, and authority are continually negotiated, then we must view learning to write in new ways as a complex and often messy network of tool-mediated human relationships best explored in terms of the social and cultural practices that people bring to their shared uses of tools” (Wardle 290). Writing is a key resource in the fundamentals of guitar playing, and therefore must be implemented to grasp the full understanding as a literate activity. There is a vast array of levels of experience between guitarists. Each guitarist coming from a different background brings their own take to the melting pot of guitar playing. Through the use of an interview and poll, people with different levels of expertise were allowed to express exactly how they used writing to aid their guitar playing.…
The Romantic Period lasted from 1785-1832. During this time, the Democratic Revolution in France launched, which was the French Revolution. This revolution caused and shaped the Romantic period to be political, social, and economic with all three drastic changes. During the Romantic Period, many authors wrote poems, with a lot of emotion of love, passion and strong messages that we can now relate with in this livelihood. The two works I selected to work with caught my attention because both poems showed a lot of suspense and were similar in various ways.…
