Is Gatsby really “great”?
Lavish, Extraordinary, Legend, these are just few words that F. Scott Fitzgerald expressed to us throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby to describe Jay Gatz. Jay Gatsby started out very poor, but worked his way up to greatness. He went through many obstacles to be the person he ended up being. Gatsby was full of hope and believed that if you work hard for what you want there will always be a good outcome. No matter what he went through in his personal life, his name as “Great” never changed. That is why Jay Gatz from The Great Gatsby deserves his title as “great”.
One of the many reasons Gatsby deserves his title, is his representation and strive of the American dream. Something many only dream about achieving.

In the novel it states, ‘I want to get the grass cut’ he said. “We both looked at the grass-there was a sharp line where my ragged lawn ended and the darker well-kept expanse of his began. I suspected that he meant my grass” (82). He hires someone to cut Nick’s grass just for some girl that he wants to please. Gatsby is very driven in the way he makes sure everything is just right for Daisy. Gatsby is a people pleaser and he hopes to make everyone happy. The author states, “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all” (98). He’s driven to make sure that he doesn’t end up like his parents were in the past with being unsuccessful farmers. That’s why he is passionate to becoming a successful man by inheriting his money, and working hard. Gatsby longed for having riches and being able to live the American dream, and being able to have happiness. Gatsby comes off as “great” by being very driven to follow what he wants in life, and doesn’t give up no matter what it takes. Even if that's becoming a rich man, and impressing a girl he

I learned that The Great Gatsby is considered the Great American novel due to its effect of making you understand why you like to read, and ability to show how literature can somehow grab you across great expanses of time and cultural differences. Even though Joel Achenbach’s idea of why The Great Gatsby is considered the Great American Novel, I also think this title is due the the book’s ability to portray the American Dream and the fantasies generated by the book's portrayal of this idea. The enjoyment of the book and its ability to show a time from another age throughout the book, makes The Great Gatsby a notable contender for the Great American Novel. However, I believe it is the book's ability to portray the American Dream and make the…

While Fitzgerald is critical of superficiality in Hollywood, Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby demonstrates a persona of wealth and shallow character. Gatsby holds onto the few months of love he felt with Daisy before he left for the war. Gatsby holds onto these feelings and is constantly stuck in the past. Fitzgerald’s entire life was put into his works, both metaphorically and literally. Fitzgerald wrote for the life he wanted to have while at the same time rebuking the very ideals he wished…

All book titles have a meaning to why the book is titled that and usually the title says it all on what the novel is going to be about or what the author is mainly centered towards. Gatsby has a meaning for the title, Fitzgerald must have a meaning to the title also, there is irony on the title, and Mr. Gatsby is reflected to this story. Nick, one of the main characters, tells us his story about Mr.Gatsby. Fitzgerald titled this novel The Great Gatsby because he wants the readers to know who he is aiming his novel towards. In the beginning of the novel, Gatsby is an unknown man who throws parties every weekend in West Egg.…

By definition the word great means: Of an extent, amount, or intensity considerably above the normal or average. The main character in the book, The Great Gatsby, is Jay Gatsby. It is implied that he is great, but does Jay Gatsby really deserve the title, The Great Gatsby? Possibly so, but it could be argued that perhaps a more accurate title might be The Deceptive Gatsby. Although Gatsby’s life may seem picturesque filled with diamonds, pearls, beautiful women and champagne, there is a rather grim side to the story that must be examined.…

That depends on how success is defined. In Geoffrey James’ article “True Secret to Success (It’s Not What You Think),” he defines a successful person as someone “who approach[es] life with a sense of gratitude” (James 1). Using James’ definition, it is easy to see that Jay Gatsby is an extremely unsuccessful man. When Nick first describes Gatsby, he exclaims, “No--Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men” (Fitzgerald 6-7). What preys on Gatsby is an insidious illness that prevents him from ever becoming content in life, even when he accomplishes his goals.…

When I first read the title, The Great Gatsby, it made the story sound mysterious and appealing. It’s almost as if the use of the word ‘Great’ makes me want to read ahead to see who exactly is Gatsby and why is he so great! I read the biography on Fitzgerald on the first page. Just like Nick, Fitzgerald also attended an Ivy League university (Princeton) and served in the war. Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her; If you can bounce high, bounce for her too, Till she cry ‘Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover, I must have you!’…

The “Great” Gatsby? Bob Marley was once quoted saying that, “the greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” This idea flawlessly accentuates the false idea many have about Jay Gatsby. He is seen as an immensely wealthy bachelor who on the surface seems to be “great” (as the title of the book represents), but in reality his importance is just a “great” illusion. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, the main character, Gatsby himself, should not be considered great due to the fact that he relies on wealth and a single woman to be happy, and he is essentially a man built on dishonesties.…

A Warning from the Past What is the American Dream? Is this Dream achievable? Since the beginning this country has been the place where many dreams have come true. The Peregrines came from across the Atlantic looking for religious freedom. Tom is a despicable character who embodies everything that is wrong with society, and flies through life unpunished. Gatsby is a man who came from humble beginnings, and made something out of himself for the sole purpose of recuperating the one thing that ever made him feel alive – Daisy. Gatsby lied, cheated, and took part in organized crime, so what can possibly him great, you may ask. Well, in my opinion, Gatsby’s never-ending optimism, simplicity of heart, and power to make his dreams into reality is what makes him “Great”. In reality, Gatsby never cared for the glamorous parties, the nice clothes, or the fast cars.…

The Great Gatsby revolves a lot around the American Dream. “During the 1920s, the perception of the American Dream was that an individual can achieve success in life regardless of family history or social status if they only work hard enough” (The Demise of the 1920’s). During the story Gatsby represents the American dream, he rises above his father and becomes the rich man he wanted to be. The novel also shows the condition of the American Dream in the 1920s. The topics of dreams, wealth, and time relate to each other in the novel’s exploration of the idea of America.…
