Be the Good Roommate
Everyone will one day, have to live with someone else. Most people have that first experience in college, when they begin a new and terrifying chapter of their lives, while living with a complete stranger. Many of these young adults have never lived with anyone other than their own family members, and may not know how to deal with this new situation. Chris O 'Connor and I decided to create our final project presentation around making that transition easier for everyone involved. We used a twitter profile to give advice and statistics about the impacts living in close quarters can have on each other. We used statistics from many college studies about the benefits of good roommates and the disadvantages of bad roommates. We pointed out the effect a good roommate can have on the average freshman GPA as well as the drop a GPA can see if paired with a bad roommate. This not only uses logos but also pathos, as GPA is important to most students and they would not typically notice a GPA change based off of their roommate. We did not apply ethos to our project as strongly as the other two appeals, because we did not feel the need to tie the project to our personal lives. While we based some of our tweets off of personal experiences with our own roommates, we did not specifically say that on the profile. One of our tweets mentioned connecting with your roommate by taking a trip to the grocery store to bond, I based that off of the way I became close with one of my roommates when she didn’t have a car our first semester living together, I did not mention that specifically in the tweet because I wanted the audience to connect to it in their own way. We have to credibility to speak on the subject but it was not general knowledge that we knew what we were talking …show more content…
With that kind of percentage it is hard to imagine that our argument would not be effective reaching our target audience. Based on the feedback we received from our classmates, most everyone can relate to having trouble with someone they live with or have lived with. Our argument could have been made stronger with audience participation. Having other people tell their stories on our page of what they have had to live with and how they dealt with it could have added the ethos we were lacking in our presentation. If we were to redo this project I would have wasted less take trying to make it about roommate blame. It took us far too long to figure out that was not a good view point on how to deal with bad situations. Once we figured out everyone needs to give and take in the relationship, it made creating the project a lot easier. Had we figure that out sooner I believe we could have made an even stronger argument base, as we would have had more time to build and create an even more relatable topic of
