How many times have you walked into a school wearing a hat and had a staff member ask you to take it off? Maybe you thought it suited your outfit, or maybe you were using it to cover up your messy hair that day. Have you ever wondered why you aren’t ever allowed to wear hats or hoods in school? I think that the hat and hood policy in schools should be changed to be less restrictive. First, some of them don’t really distract or obscure anybody at all. Also, the main reason, blocking faces from security cameras, doesn’t even apply in rooms without them. Lastly, using them to hide items is not really something that would commonly happen, as people could more easily hide items in their other clothing, their bag, …show more content…
While it is possible, anybody hiding something probably wouldn’t hide it in their hat. The space under an average hat (that isn’t obnoxiously large) usually isn’t very big. Even if they did have enough space for whatever they were hiding, it would probably be uncomfortable enough to not want to keep it there very long, especially if it is hard or a little heavy, as it is essentially just on top of their head. Under a hat isn’t the most convenient place to hide something, either. It’s usually easy to see if someone is pulling something out of one. Most students, especially during colder weather, could probably hide an item in their other clothes or in their bag and remove it in a more stealthy fashion. All things considered, the hat isn’t a very good hiding spot.
The most common argument given on behalf of the hat/hood policy is that they can be used to obscure faces from security cameras and distract others. While this is certainly true sometimes, I don’t think it justifies not letting students wear hats of any kind. Many hats are usually not very big. Smaller hats, especially of a plainer color, don’t stick out and therefore don’t commonly distract others. The same smaller hats usually won’t end up obscuring someone’s face from a security
