The Importance Of Equality In The Education System

Equality has been a topic that has been fought for in the United States for many years now. Going back to past years, people fought for rights to vote, rights to resources, and rights for opportunities. Even after some of those rights have been accomplished, reality is that we still see oppression and isms in effect in our country. Yes, we have achieved some equality, however, there are people in our country that have more privilege and power due to their color, economic status, or gender. Our education system in this country is supposed to reflect what we have fought for, equality, which means equal education for everyone. Is equality what we really need? If everyone has access to the same education standards, then why do we see an educational achievement gap in our system? Our academic system reflects that people with a higher socioeconomic status, who tend to be white, have a higher success rate in academics. The people of color, on the other hand, who tend to be of lower income communities, have lower academic success. Academic standards are the same for everyone and every child is expected to meet those standards, yet our system fails to realize that not every child is the same. The …show more content…
Usually, the schools in low-income communities receive less funding than schools in wealthier communities. Less funding affects education because schools will have fewer funds to access quality resources. With more funding, schools are able to hire higher qualified teachers and get better services for their students. Schools with less funding might struggle in getting their students the proper materials for their learning. Students might have to share books or might not have access to computers. With having these differences in resources, students are still expected to meet the same academic

After we touched the topics of Race and Ethnicity and Social Inequalities in the education system in the United States in ED-160, I was curious about how those inequalities affect the lives of students today. As I began my research about the inequalities that students face, I found an article that stated that “the ultimate test of an educational system is whether it makes sure that every student, whatever their background, is exposed to the content they need to compete in today's society.” It was disturbing to read that “U.S. schools are failing this most basic test.” I also found an article where Gaston Caperton said “Tests are not the problem, students are not the problem. The problem we have is an unfair education system in America-an unequal…

America, there is equal opportunity for all. We all make decisions from day one that limit that opportunity, but it's there for each and every one of us. In American society, equality is still and should be our most respected values but in many ways we have really just created a new meaning of equality when it comes to other Americans or immigrants in our country, and the way their status shall be perceived.…

The presupposition of school cannot achieve the gap between students from different ethnic and racial backgrounds is a categorical truth. Carol Burris and Kevin Welner argued that school is not to blame for the achievement gap, but to blame the economic conditions . William Mathis argues that achievement gap can’t be solved because of discrimination in school. The three archetypes that exemplify that school can’t close the achievement gap are; lower class students don’t have enough supplies for school, lower class parents don’t encourage their kids, and discrimination in school by teachers, staff, administrators. Three different sources that support the achievement gap between students are two scholarly sources by Romo Harriett and Gary Evans…

Over the last couple of years, headlines about schools have become more and more prevalent. Whether it was about school lunches (and how bad they are) or how schools are helping their students for the better, stories about schools have been and will always be in the headlines. However, there is one story that has shown up plenty of times and has no definite solution: underfunded public schools. Public schools all over the nation, from Chicago to Philadelphia, have been declining for a while. Many believe the decline is from a lack of discipline.…

Free Blacks Were Treated Differently Equality has been a problem in American history for many years, especially for African Americans. Even in the past when slaves would earn or become free blacks, they were still treated as less than free whites with fewer rights. The law would get in the way of African Americans having equal rights like those who had light skin. Even after they fought with whites in the Civil War, they were still treated differently.…

Students and school systems in lower income areas with predominantly minority students tend to have lower achievement than their affluent white counterparts (Gardner 2007). Scott Nearing found that “in 1927, South Carolina spent $2.74 per ‘Negro’ student and $27.88 per White student” (Nearing 1929, as cited in Gardner 2007).That means schools systems spent 10-20 times more money per white student than black student. Black students through history have been disadvantaged by black slave codes, then Jim Crow laws, and finally by institutionalized racism (Gardner 2007). While education has not always been equally dispersed amongst white students, they have had more access than black students because of the lack of discriminatory laws. In this modern age, there are many problems that contribute to keeping up the achievement gap.…

Despite how much we try to reach this fairness and equality, time and time again history proves that we are far from it. numerous discriminatory restrictions. Societal attitudes place the sole onus on inmates for being in prison. Establishing a system that funnels Blacks into prison is a disguised plan to ensure Black and other low-valued populations maintain minimum control and power in society. Evidence for this new caste system can be demonstrated through the example of police practices such an increase presence, arrests, and excessive brutality in low-income predominantly Black neighborhoods. Police efforts to specifically target Black neighborhoods directly connect to the mass incarceration of people of color.…

In the academic institutions of today’s society, educating young minds on issues surrounding equity and diversity not only within education systems but also within the society we as individuals relate to, appears to be an increasing desire among educators and parents. This desire arises from the growing concern that issues involving equity and diversity must be implemented into course curriculum to alleviate concerns that young generations are not given opportunities to learn how to properly approach controversies and obstacles with these topics in their society. By incorporating materials and concepts of equity and diversity into all classrooms, including collegiate level classes, I believe that individuals will develop an improved understanding…

Equity in education is proven to close the achievement gap and in order to make that happen, teachers and schools have to start now. “If we are serious about closing what I call the 'opportunity gap, ' it has to start with high-quality early-learning opportunities in disadvantaged communities that have been denied for too long (Duncan, 2013). It has been too long for students to be denied the right to go to college because they did not have the resources and opportunities compared to other students. The U.S education system promises to help prepare all students for college and graduate high school.…
