In the article, Is the Drive for Success Making Our Children Sick? By Vicki Abeles exposes how teenagers and now younger children are pushing themselves to be successful but causing them to be stressed. Stuart Slavin, a pediatrician, and professor who studied at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Slavin was unprepared for the results from Irvington High School in Fremont, Calif. He had anonymously surveyed two-thirds of Irvington’s students. He used the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. 54 % of students showed symptoms of depression. By Vicki Abeles it made me think that the schools put so much stress on children. Schools have to teach kids and have to give homework and some kids don't know how to time manage but the stress that kids have because of school is shocking. For most people, they have things going on after school. Like let's say marching band, they have practice Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and competitions Saturday. They have to time manage. Let's say they have to write a PLN, like this one, and they are due on Friday's at 7am, they have Tuesday and Thursday after school. On MWF most students don't have time to do homework because of how late it gets out or other things, like showering and dinner. Students at Arapahoe probably feel stressed about school and other things in their life. Schools need to cut down on the way that they put stress on the child. Arapahoe helps students if they are struggling, some other schools don't and it's sad that schools don't care about their students. In addition, 1 out of 3 children are stressed that drove them to sadness or depression is shocking. Students can underestimate homework and things like that but 1/3 led to sadness or depression is guilt wrenching to think about. Also, now that elementary school students are stressed about school is alarming. Elementary was so easy and it's meant to be but now young children are worrying about homework and stressing about the 1st grade is sad to think about. Schools should rethink how to not put so much stress on children and young

Have you ever felt the need to take a day off school because of high stress and anxiety levels? Studies have shown that teenagers have recently shown an increase in stress, depression, and anxiety levels. This can lead to poor school performance. Should students have to go to school when they feel mentally unstable or should mental health days be a valid excuse for an absence. I believe that students should be able to use mental health as a valid excuse, just as sick days because it is quite impossible to focus on school and classwork when on the verge of a mental breakdown or on the verge of tears.…

When I read, “The Sanctuary of School,” by Lynda Barry, starting on page 721 and ending on 725, I realized that she and I share many views and experiences regarding the power of the education system. I agree with Barry that school is a safe haven for children all over the world, that art provides the intimate power to heal, and that budget cuts are essentially hurting students in their education. I am currently a high school student taking rigorous courses, and Barry’s article truly connected with my experiences through school. The first thing that sparked my interest while reading Barry’s article was the strong emphasis she pushed on her opinion that school is a safe haven for children, especially those who experience hardship in their personal…

Working at an elementary school has its fair share of stressors from meeting each child's different needs to working within deadlines. At Kemptown Elementary School specifically, I face stress every minute of every day. There is always something to keep me busy, even when it seems like there is no time. The main stressors I observe every day are not being able to to the control situations out of my control, little planning time, and an increased responsibility in the classes learning.
