Is The Death Penalty A Justice Issue?

Improved Essays
In my opinion, the death penalty is a justice issue because it unnecessarily takes the life of another person. After learning and debating about the death penalty in history class, I personally feel that the death penalty is wrong. There are several solid arguments for why the death penalty is wrong and should be illegal. First, there is a racial and gender bias among death row inmates. The number of black men executed for killing white men is more than ten times the number of white men executed for killing black men. Also, women only make up two percent of the total death row population. Both of these discrepancies point out clear biases toward both race and gender. These are unfair for certain people and it is wrong to assess someone’s life

The morality of the death penalty has long been, and still is a controversial topic in the United States. People have been debating for centuries whether or not this form of punishment should exist. Those supporting it have claimed that the death penalty acts as a deterrent of future crimes. On the other hand, those against it have disproved this claim. Studies show that capital punishment should not be used in the United States, since it does not act as a deterrent, certain groups are more likely to be sentenced to death, and it does not offer closure for families.…

Historically speaking the numbers of executions in the United States has been one sided for the most part when it comes to gender. Since the 1930's there have been only 32 executions federally of female prisoners where as by the same token men represent the overwhelming majority at 3827 sanctioned executions (Whitehead, & Blankenship, 2000). Further more in examine the sex bias in capital punishment cases it is found that women are far less likely to be arrested for murder as well as receive a death sentence should they ever receive a conviction for murder (Rapaport,1991). The extrapolation that can be gathered from both the quantitative as well as the qualitative evidence as presented by peer review does suggest that there is disparaging…

Death Penalty The death penalty has always been a very controversial topic to speak about because everyone has their own personal beliefs. The death penalty is to some as a way to severely punish people who have done awful things, now to others it is a kind of cruel and unusual punishment, something that in this country should not happen according to the United States Constitution. In 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court stopped the states from carrying out the death penalty for being racially biased etc. Texas then resumed executions in 1982 and is one of thirty-two states that imposes capital punishment, being by far the most active in killing convicted criminals.…

The death penalty is mainly used in criminal cases when a criminal kills multiple people, he or she is a fugitive of the law, or when someone else has over sixty offenses. There are restrictions on who the penalty can be used against and the reason, for the penalty being put on a person. It is known that there are exceptions to all the rules and for this reason the death penalty should not be allowed in the United States. Imagine being a grieving mother whose child made a mistake because no one saw the warning signs, and no one got him help. It is realized that what they did was wrong but no matter how bad the crime committed was, you cannot force yourself to love your family any less and seeing someone you love punished by death is hard for…

The death penalty has continuously been used ever since European settlers brought it over in the seventeenth century. “The first recorded execution in the new colonies was that of Captain George Kendall in the Jamestown colony of Virginia in 1608” (“Part I: History of the Death Penalty”). He was executed for being a spy for Spain. The death penalty varied and each colony had different laws regarding it during colonial times. In Virginia, Governor Sir Thomas Dale enacted the Divine, Moral, and Martial Laws.…

    1. I have read the story of creation in Genesis before, but I had never heard someone interpret the story the way Ekblad does while talking to the prisoners and Julio’s family. Although most people now do not take the story of creation literally, most people also do not seem to dig that deep into the story. Although I think it is a bit of a stretch to take so much away from a few simple verses describing the darkness and chaos before God created the world, I did appreciate how he was able to use those verses to make the Bible more tangible to the inmates. The way he relates the darkness and chaos to the issues the inmates are dealing with every day and how he describes to them that God is always “hovering” around them seemed to grab their attention and make them more confident in their beliefs.…

Whilst some think that the death penalty is a fair sanction, it is an inequitable penance because many convicts on death row suffered from prejudiced trials, were mentally-ill, or were wrongfully accused. There have been hundreds of unjustified deaths from the death penalty. In conclusion, the death sentence is an unnecessary form of punishment that advocates the obliteration of human life. There is no proof whatsoever that the death penalty serves as a deterrent to…

The death penalty is wrong, inhumane and ineffective. Every year billions of dollars and thousands of man hours go into trying to take convicts lives. These felons are men and women who have committed murders. Some people may say that since they took someone else's life they don't deserve to live themselves, but I disagree with that. Taking the life of the killer won't bring the victim back and is unethical, expensive and unfairly or wrongly given sometime.…

Far more variation is apparent in death row composition by both race and gender than by class. As of January 1, 2013, 63 females were on death row awaiting execution, or 2.02% of the total death row population, and 1,351 whites, or 43.17% of the total death row population (Reiman & Leighton, 2013). Other than being a variable in the study of death row demographics, social class is basically a constant; practically every individual sentenced to death falls within…

The death penalty has been around for as long as civilizations have been around, but is it wrong? Many people will argue that it is immoral, that the government can not and should not have the power to decide whether someone lives or dies. Many others will argue that it is necessary, whether it is immoral or not, as a punishment for those who commit heinous crimes, like mass murder, treason, terroristic attacks, and anything related to these three acts in any kind of way. So if about fifty percent of people argue that it is wrong, while the other fifty percent argue that it is right, than who is correct? People who argue that the death penalty is wrong, whether because they believe it is immoral or that the government should not have that kind of power, are understandable.…
