Is The American Dream Over Cal Thomas Analysis

Fantasy though Reality The American Dream a fantasy thought to be reality. In the article "Is the American Dream Over?" Cal Thomas uses logical though ethical appeals along with his use of diction and some imagery, to express his point to the receiving audience that the American Dream is over. Thomas starts off his claim by using a piece from Bob Herbert's "Hiding from Reality." He states that Herbert didn't necessarily blame anyone for the end of the American Dream. As the the first paragraph continues he states causes that brought about the end. " Setting aside war, which was imposed on America, the eclipse of liberalism's American Dream has been largely caused by expanding, encroaching, over-taxing, over-spending, and over-regulating government" (Thomas 569). In by targeting the government as a first example he is able to appeal to those who would agree with him. Thomas use of diction really contributes to his logical approach to his stance. His use of logical and ethical appeals just adds to it. The diction and minor imagery contributes, along with the connection to the audience. One drawback or negative thing was that at some parts seemed a bit bias, but it was nothing that would destroy the writing. The positives seen out weighs any bad. The audience can find many parts to relate to and get involved with. Appealing to the people was a step in the right direction. Highlighting the wrong of liberals and the government can draw people in. Acknowledging reality is something that many hardly choose. Placing the blame also can give the audience something to talk about. Thomas states that Herbert didn't really place any blame upon anyone in his writing “Hiding from reality.” Condemning Thomas on this writing doesn't really do it justice. Almost anyone who reads this can clearly see where he stands and come to reason with him regardless of their own
