Technology is changing us. Most importantly, the information that we process in all forms or media is changing the way we live. Even though it’s the 20th century and technology is more involved in our lives than are parents are, we still don’t see how the media has been changing us. Nicholas Carr in “The Shallows” stated “It seems ludicrous to think that the computer, a tool, could alter what was going on inside my brain.” When there is new technology -- either a new phone or a new coffee machine-- all we want to do is adapt it somehow to our everyday lives. “With the exception of the alphabets and number systems, the Net may well be the single most powerful mind-altering technology that has ever come into general use.” (Carr 118) But, is this something bad?
Carr asserted “I’m not thinking the way I used to think” (5) and this is all due to technology. But how could it not be? It surrounds us everywhere, there are phones, computers, microwaves, and so much more. “Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words no I zip along the surface like a guy on a jet ski.” (Carr 7) This is true for all of us, not too of a while ago, we had to do tons of research to get something done, now all we have to do is look up in Google, and we can …show more content…
It has, indeed, made our lives so much easier and we can finish so many thing in a small amount of time, but we have got to a point where our concentration does not even exist. We can not even read a small passage without starting to text or listen to music. We start to multitask and when we do, it is not possible for us to do things right. “The brain is not the machine we once thought it to be” (Carr 29), and this is precisely because we do not live like we used
