It is often difficult to define a bad parent, because it is subjective. What one person sees as abusive others may see it as loving discipline. In the story, T. Ray has lily work for him at the peach stand, he want her to sell peaches and not read. Lily sees reading as educational, while T. Ray sees it has lazy and unproductive. He is trying to show her how to be a good worker. Some may see this as abuse, while others see it as a teaching moment of how to be a good worker. IN the end, T. RAy saw that LIly Would be a better person if she lived with August. On page 299 Lily realized T. ray loved deborah with all his heart when she left he was mad at the world. T. ray sees much of deborah in LIly. This is why i believe he is angry with Lily.She was supposed to be the person he grew old with. At the end of the story on page 295, Lily comes to realization of why T. RAy was abusive with her. As he is holding her by the hair she is thinking, “It had cross my mind that he was no longer talking to me but to Deborah. Like his mind had snapped back ten years.He is reacting to a life without deborah after many years.
Why are the bees significant to Lily?
Throughout the novel bees pop up in lily’s life often. Early on they teach her to leave her home and go to Tiburon. Later in the novel she is licking the bees honey off Zach’s finger when she realizes she is in love with him Lastly she sees a beehive as community of female workers working to support the queen. On page 148 August tells Lily that, “ … every bee has its role.” This reminds her of the Boatwright house. When August shares this with her, Lily is able to notice how much bees demonstrate the real world.

Even though they have different beliefs, they have very similar actions in worship. Both churches and the daughters of Mary, come together in community, sing praises, and worship a being or object. Both groups find importance in prayer. In the story when they are trying to find May. August tells June to go call cops and that, “When you hang up, You kneel before Our Lady and beg her to watch over May, Then you come back.”(pg. 190). August is telling June that she needs to pray that June will be safe.
