“Statically Islam is the second religion in France, but socially it is practiced by a group of people that is dominated, unprivileged and reduced to political silence.” Ever since the attacks on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo in January of 2015, France has deemed itself incompatible with immigrants, particularly those who identify as Muslim or come from North Africa or the Middle East. Since the start of 2015 there have been more than 11 large-scale attacks affiliated with ISIS, causing greater cultural rifts and xenophobia in French communities. The millions of Muslim French-born citizens and immigrants though have had to suffer because of these intolerances, making assimilation and integration particular difficult for everyone who is Muslim and non-white. Given that the French colonized North Africa, otherwise known as the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya), and imposed French values and language it seems their responsibility to take in immigrants willingly and assimilation would ensue peacefully. Yet the conflict that is currently unfolding has be deemed France’s apartheid. The Boston Review reported, “an Arabic-sounding last name pushes you to the back of the line for good jobs just as does the wrong postal code. Muslims make up about 8 percent of France’s population but in some prisons 60–80 percent of inmates.” These practices of oppression prevent social integration; which for this paper will be defined as when residents finally feel invested in…
