While some will argue that the money spent on space exploration and research programs should be spent on the poor of our nation, this is a false assumption. To prove this statement, one can look at the fact that NASA needs good technology in order to communicate with the astronauts. Thus, they made satellites to enable long distance communication. The satellites have also led to ways for us to make better weather forecasts, detect oil spills, detect forest fires, detect aquifer depletion, and locating where aircraft have crashed (Fowler). Also, many soccer fans are grateful for the technology which allowed them to have “recently watched the World Cup matches from Brazil in near real-time via satellite feed” (Fowler). Of course, there are many other sports fans that are grateful for near real-time live streaming of their favorite sports and competitions via satellite. Furthermore, people “can surf the Internet with laptop or tablet while flying in an airplane almost anywhere in the world. We are more connected than ever, both in our everyday activities and in emergency situations” (Fowler).
