Snowball bravely leads the animals against all odds to defend the farm from human opposition. To stop the unfair rule of humans, “Snowball…was in charge of defensive operations…he gave the orders quickly” (Orwell 41). Snowball was fighting to stop the controlling rule of the humans and to preserve the equality and communism that the pigs had established. Snowball promotes the concept of Animalism, the book’s version of communism, which promotes equality for all animals on the farm, and is planned to drastically raise the quality of life for the animals as well. “…Snowball…explained…they …form an unalterable law by which …animals must live on” (Orwell 24). By endorsing equality and helping unintelligent animals share the same values as those who could afford to work less, Snowball unites the farm, making it whole once again. Orwel develops the character of Snowball to clearly represent Leon Trotsky.
