Rotten Tomatoes, a respected website devoted to film reviews, gave Shrek a high rating of 88% while Mean Girls received a slightly lower rating of 83%, respectively. IMDb, another website that consists of information related to films, also gave Shrek a higher rating than Mean Girls, with Shrek garnering a rating of 7.9 compared to a Mean Girls rating of 7.0. Although the margin between the two movies is small, it gives Shrek the upper hand as the better satirical movie. Statistics aside, is Shrek the better satirical film than Mean Girls? The whole movie is a spoof of fairytale stories and its characters. For example, when Shrek found Fiona in her room, he didn’t kiss her like a prince would in any other fairytale, instead, Shrek shook her awake. Also, Lord Farquaad’s need to marry a princess to become the King of Duloc makes no sense since he is already the ruler of the land. This mocks many of the classic stories found in fairytales where a prince must marry a princess to rule the land. Furthermore, at the end of the movie, the fairy turns an onion into a carriage that Shrek and Fiona would board. This is obviously a parody of Cinderella where the fairy turns a pumpkin into a carriage. As stated before, the movie makes fun of fairytale characters. The Three Blind Mice are actually blind and the big bad wolf from the Little Red Riding Hood isn’t portrayed as big and bad. Instead, the wolf wears a bathing cap, a nightgown, and even sings at the end of the movie. Pinocchio is also found in the film, lying as his nose gets bigger trying the convince people he’s a real boy. Other additional examples of parody includes the wrestling match in the courtyard where Shrek and Donkey fight Farquaad’s men in a WWE-type setting. Incongruity is when things are presented out of place or absurd to its surroundings. For instance, the donkey speaks, and donkey’s definitely do not speak. And then there’s the part where the dragon wears lipstick. Never in any stories has a dragon wore any lipstick. Then there’s the absurd scene where the dragon is actually attracted to the donkey! How is the dragon attracted to a donkey? They’re not even remotely close to being the same species. In another case, Princess Fiona has a curse that turns her into an ogre. Princesses usually never turn into hideous creatures, so it differs immensely from the other fairytales. Additional forms of incongruity found in the film is when Shrek showers in mud, which doesn’t make sense since mud doesn’t necessarily clean you like water does. As a result of Shrek’s masterful use of incongruity, it shows that it is an exceptional satirical
