Programs play a very important role in today’s society. Even though these programs are essential to us, we are left asking ourselves questions such as; what is rehabilitation? What programs do we have and what programs would be the most effective for rehabilitation? What can we do to get people involved in the current programs? What would people do while waiting to get into these programs? Rehabilitation is a big part of programs and is something that we want everyone to have the chance to partake in. These programs are filling up fast and not allowing everyone to participate in them when they should. While funds may present an issue, there would not be much more added cost. The prisons can cut costs by coordinating with nearby colleges and asking for students to volunteer to help lead programs that coordinate with their major of interest. By having a student based volunteer program, with a subject matter expert facilitating, prisons would not have to worry about hefty added fees of hiring someone to run these programs and they can provide a facility for students to learn in a controlled environment in their field. Students would be interested in this because most progressive colleges today have some form of credit that they can give to their students that acknowledges the volunteer work that they put into something like this.
When statistics show a severe decrease in recidivism because of involvement in programs, it places more of an urgency on the need to increase participation and growth of these programs. With no shortage of classes and an incentive for the inmates to participate, there would be more of a reason for the individuals confined to get involved and change. They help walk individuals through real problems so they will know what to expect at the time of their release. This helps them build resources, accountability and also teaches them how to collaborate with others to become successful. It is ideal that the case managers help connect the graduates of these classes with possible employers prior to being released. In addition, the re-entry programs prepare the individual to re-enter their communities with as little complications as possible. These kinds of programs play a significant role in reducing or helping reduce recidivism rates.
