Is Reading Worth Being Able To Read?

Improved Essays
Being able to read is necessary in order to achieve things in life including: being able to graduate from school and being able to hold down a job. Aiken and Groth-Marnat (2006) state that “many problems experienced by children in learning school subjects are associated with reading” (p. 214). Therefore, reading tests are important in helping to diagnose problems concerning reading abilities so that those having trouble with reading can get the proper help they need. There are three major categories that reading tests fall under: survey tests, diagnostic tests, and reading-readiness tests (Aiken & Groth-Marnat, 2006, p. 215). Survey tests are used to assess a person’s overall reading ability. These tests are divided into categories

Two examples of other informal reading assessments are the Phonics Mastery Survey and Phonemic Awareness Assessments. The Phonics Mastery Survey is an informal tool for assessing various phonics elements. This assessment measures a student’s ability to recognize consonant sounds, rhyming words, consonant digraphs, long vowel sounds, words with CVC patterns, consonant blends, variant vowel sounds, and syllables in words (DeVries 2011 p.112). A student’s ability to use knowledge of sound/letter correspondences to decode words, determines his or her ability to read individual words. Knowing the skills that the students possess will assist the teacher in selecting reading tasks that offer the most effective reinforcement of those phonics skills.…

S’niya, a fourth-grade student at Miramar Elementary School, was given four assessments from a Scholastic resource packet that helps to determine what level of reading a student is currently achieving. The Scholastic resource assessments allow a teacher to establish an idea of the student’s reading proficiency and also helps to conclude what sort of instructional plan would best suit the needs of each individual student. With the Clinical Educator’s discretion, S’niya was assigned to complete a third-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment, and a fourth-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment. Based on past test scores, the teacher speculated that was a possibility that S’niya was not working on par with her grade level.…

One minute fluency assessments, like Aimsweb, are useful tools for discovering reading difficulties but they do not reveal the reason behind these difficulties (Applegate, Applegate, Mcgeehan, Pinto, & Kong, 2009; Ardoin & Christ, 2009; Deeney, 2010; January & Ardoin, 2012; Murray, Munger, & Clonan, 2012). To determine whether or not a student is performing at grade level and is making adequate progress throughout the year, Aimsweb is a good tool to use. However, it should not be used to determine what type of intervention to administer to a student. In fact, relying on measures such as Aimsweb, can generate a misunderstanding behind a student’s fluency and therefore cause the teacher to provide an inadequate intervention (Deeney, 2010). It is important to note that Aimsweb can be a useful tool to determine low performing students.…

This sample could make it difficult to analyze the differences in reliability for the different minority groups because they are underrepresented (Whiston, 2013). In addition, there were more females than males in the sample, making it difficult to generalize to males. Also, although the original inventory has been used with students as young as 13 and the original inventory was shown to be at a sixth-grade reading level, the review of the current BDI-II shows that only college and clinical patients were used in the evaluation sample (Farmer, 2001). This would warrant caution when using the BDI-II with students. This is also an ethical consideration as school counselors need to consider the students’ developmental age, level of competence, and language skills before assessments are given, ASCA ethical standard A.9.c (ASCA, 2010).…

These areas are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency and comprehension. It does not evaluate oral language and vocabulary (READ, 2013). Teachers being able to identify at risk students early in the year will help them to redesign their literacy instruction to help students to succeed, which will in effect cause children to enjoy reading and writing. Even though it does not evaluate all six diagnostic areas of literacy it can give the teacher an idea of where each student is in their learning process. Each grade has specific tasks that they are evaluated on, which will give an early indication of student at risk.…
