A simple thing that can enforce that a nurse is reliable to there patients in being on time at points of the day. This can mean serving breakfast at the correct time. Or when a call bell is sounded that you create sometime and arrive timely to help them with the patients needs. A nurse must also be reliable in having answers to any and all problems they could experience. It is most relevant when a nurse is in charge of a large rural area and can be the only health care expert for many miles. As without clear and defined boundaries there would be issues when a nurse did not follow the boundaries. The main reason for boundaries as with many parts of nursing it is all about protecting the public. The public is who we work for and with and without there trust that if a nurse is not competent. Then you cannot maintain a trust relationship with them and the entire profession would be pointless. Also the boundaries exist for when a nurse has taken power onto themselves. They have then done something not within concordance of the professional boundaries. "They have greater power because of their authority and influence." Disciplinary action can then follow if the breach of the boundaries is serious enough. This can mean we must always be vigilant in any interactions with patients and gifts. While a simple gesture of taking a mint or other treat can be harmless. It can long term effects if the patient has not able to recall what became of her things and then becomes insulted. A problem with following boundaries such as these is when another culture becomes a problem. It can sometimes be a great insult to those of other cultures not to accept some sort of gift in thanks. In the families or patients eyes they only wish to show gratitude to you for the hard work you have done.
