Pornography: Is it Harmful to Women? In this paper, I will be arguing that censoring pornography is in fact more harmful than helpful to women. I will be using the article by Nadine Strossen, Why Discrimination Would Not Reduce Discrimination or Violence against Women, to further defend my argument. In this article, Strossen defends the theory that there is no evidence to prove that pornography causes harm to women through evaluations of experiments, surveys, and other articles stating that pornography does cause harm. I agree with Strossen’s argument about the lack of evidence to support the theory that pornography causes women harm, and will argue three main points to defend my stance on the topic. I will first argue that exposure to pornography does not harm women because there is evidence showing that areas with the lowest violent crime rates have the highest availability of sexual materials. Second, I will argue that if pornography were to become censored, these businesses could become “underground” businesses that put the women involved with pornography in more danger. If pornography businesses were to become underground work, the workplace would most likely grant far less rights to these women than if pornography was not censored. Since pornography production is not currently illegal, women working in this industry still hold rights within the workplace, but if this line of work did become illegal then the result would be the degradation of women due to their lack of protected work rights. Therefore, if pornography was not censored, these women would be able to earn rights that protected them against workplace
