Is PAS Ethical?

Decent Essays
Your statement that the question "Is PAS ethical?" is almost similar to questioning someone else's religious beliefs is the most compelling statement for the concept of PAS. The reason I cannot agree with PAS is because I simply do not believe suicide belongs in the healthcare field. Healthcare is undiscriminating but it stands for the wellbeing of one's health and optimal life. Death cannot equate to life no matter what way we spin it. Physicians who assist in bringing an end to one's life merely to clear the conscience of said person only brings controversy to the healthcare industry. Overdose is one of many ways a person can commit suicide which is everyone's individual private right, but the offer from PAS is not one that any individual

Moreover, the logic of decriminalizing PAS for the terminally ill who are suffering grievously would lead inexorably to allowing other types of killing. If the rational for PAS is to respect autonomy, then why limit it to those are terminally ill?Why privilege the autonomy of those who are suffering and terminally ill above those who are suffering chronically? If the rational for PAS is that person is in misery or has allegedly lost her dignity-if,for such people, death is a benefit-then it will be impossible to deny this alleged benefit to those who lack decision making capacity, those who are unconscious, or demented, or too young to have such capacity. Thus out of respect for life, and out of compassion and care for the elderly, dying and disabled,PAS…

So what exactly is considered a Physician-Assisted suicide? Physician-Assisted suicide, is a suicide where the physician provides the necessary means of information and the patient performs the act, and euthanasia is defined as “ the act of bringing about the death of a hopelessly ill and suffering person in a relatively quick and painless way for reasons of mercy, or simply described as a “ mercy killing”. (Back et al) The debate about the legalization of the law and of the steps to intentionally take one 's life to end suffering remains a controversial topic. However, I do believe there are several basic conclusions that can be argued both for and against PAS and euthanasia, that could outweigh the continuously controversial banning of the…

The alternative way is Euthanasia, which Anderson describes as, “the intentional killing of a patient by doctor”. Anderson claims that this can only lead to Euthanasia because if we are to be logically compassionate, we can’t discriminate the option from patients who are unable to administer the deadly drugs themselves on account of being handicapped in some way. Anderson also states that there is no constitutional right to physician-assisted suicide. Anderson then again quotes an article from The Heritage Foundation Backgrounder, which states four reasons that PAS is a bad idea. The article claims first that it endangers the weak, despite failing safeguards with evidence that in three countries in Europe, “thousands” of cases have been found of doctor’s killing patients without a request.…

By giving a way out, a doctor is not “killing” their patient, but instead making them more comfortable under the harsh circumstances. However, it is important that the strict requirements for eligibility remain intact. Physician assisted suicide should only be an option for patients during unfortunate circumstances in which they have a limited amount of time left. PAS should never be an option for people who are not terminally ill, including those with depression. This would ensure that PAS is only used for the right reasons and does not threaten the weak and vulnerable.…

It seems cruel to make someone live in pain and suffering even if it is a short while. I also believe in order to prevent innocent deaths there needs to be strict laws in place to safeguard individuals from false requests of PAS. I also realize in theory PAS may seem like a good idea but as we go deeper into discussion PAS may not be the most practical process. On the flip side I can see how some may oppose PAS from a religious stand point since many religions, especially Catholics, believe that those who commit suicide go to hell; although it could be…

The routine practice of physician assisted suicide raises serious ethical and other concern. Legislation would undermine the patient's physical relationship and the trust necessary to sustain it; alter the medical profession role in society; and endanger the value our society places in lives of disabled, incompetent and vulnerable…

Physician-assisted suicide (PAS) is the voluntary termination of a person’s life with the assistance of a physician in a controlled environment allows a quick, painless, and dignified death for those suffering from terminal illnesses. The arguments against physician-assisted suicide are ineffective because it gives terminally ill patients the right a dignified death. Today, five states have legalized physician-assisted suicide, sparing families in those states from watching their loved ones go through unbearable suffering and pain. The question of assisted suicide, and later physician-assisted suicide, has been long debated.…

Part of me is for PAS because I believe that people who are terminally ill should have the right to choose whether or not they wish to suffer or not. However, my nursing side of me feels that PAS is contradicting with a nurse’s standard of care which is to preserve life and help heal the sick. Another point of why I am personally unsure of PAS is based on my religion, which is why most citizens are also opposing PAS. In regards to Catholics, their view of PAS is, “The official position of the Roman Catholic Church is strict: killing of a human being, even by an act of omission to eliminate suffering, violates divine law and offends the dignity of the human person (Death with Dignity, 2013, p. 1).”…

In order to come up with an opinion over the idea of physician-assisted suicide, one must take into consideration many viewpoints and try to analyze such an act through the four basic principles of medical ethics. In regards to autonomy, the practice seems justified. If a patient wants to depart this world with dignity or relieve him or herself from future pain, then they have the right to do so. As a physician, I would have to respect a patient’s right to choose what happens to his or her body. The other principles can contradict the idea of autonomy.…

Everyone in the world will experience the subject of death at some point their lives. Vice versa, a patient whose family pressures her to choose life when it would be the better option to have PAS. Additionally, there is a moral distinction between killing and letting die. Currently, some “physician assisted suicides” are legal such as a doctor forgoing treatment upon a patient’s request or terminal sedation, where medical staff gives the patient pain medication until she dies. Thus, why are some methods of PAS allowed but euthanasia is not? Velleman argues because the option would harm the patient but perhaps it is more an issue of…

Some argue that PAS is ethical. Often this is argued on the grounds that PAS may be a rational choice for a person who is choosing to die to escape unbearable suffering. Furthermore, the physician's duty to alleviate suffering may, at times, justify the act of providing assistance with suicide. This relies a great deal on the notion of individual autonomy, recognizing the right of competent people to choose for themselves the course of their life, including how it will…

Physician Assisted Suicide Should Be Legalized Two thirds of out of 703 people believe if a patient is in a lot of pain, they should get the option of PAS (physician assisted suicide.) The diseases people have could threaten their lives, they could be on their deathbed with days to live. If someone knows they are dying and they are in extreme pain, they should get the choice to be killed by the physician if that is what they really want. Many people wonder when this really started becoming an issue, and what arguments people have for PAS.…
