Shakespeare uses the character Iago to show betrayal by sabotaging Othello and Cassio’s life. For example, when Iago stirs up a conversation with Cassio and Othello is watching them and believes Desdemona did indeed cheat on him. The handkerchief that Bianca threw at Cassio also added on to Othello’s fury because it is a gift that Othello gave to Desdemona. Iago betrayed his best friend Othello for his own personal benefits and best friends should not lie about something as serious like Othello’s relationship. In addition, there’s another example of betrayal between Desdemona and Emilia. For example, when Emilia stole Desdemona’s handkerchief in order to satisfy Iago’s demands. This is an example of betrayal because stealing from a close person is showing a sign of disloyalty. Consequently, the stolen handkerchief led Othello to believe Desdemona is cheating on him and causes her death. This betrayal by Emilia led to detrimental consequences.
