What I Learned In Organic Chemistry Class

Organic chemistry is a challenge. So many people have told me how demanding and scary it is, and even though I was terrified coming into this year, I am ready to take on the challenge. It is a challenge that will hopefully end up with a rewarding learning experience as well as prepare me for life after college. Throughout this course, I think that it is vital to know how you learn best, what the professor is expecting of you, as well as how the class is structured and the policies within it.
Understanding your personal learning style is essential to succeeding in not only classes but in jobs. Based on the VARK survey that we took on the first day, I learn best from notes and textbooks as well as from examples and trial and error. The combination of reading and writing as well as kinesthetic helps me to thoroughly understand a topic.

In my room I am able to read the textbook and take as long as I need to process and understand the information. In lecture, I can write notes based on what Dr. Gao lectures on and what she emphasizes to be important. In addition to reading and writing, I have a strong kinesthetic preference. I can learn in this way in lab with practical experiments to demonstrate some of the topics that are covered in lecture. Also, in lecture, examples are given and through trial and error, I am able to figure out how to conquer a problem and understand the reasoning behind it. In addition to knowing yourself best, understanding what the professor’s expectations are and their philosophy behind teaching will also greatly benefit you and your ability to

AP Chemistry has made me realize that you need to work hard for the things you want. AP Chemistry is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. It was full of hard concepts and ideas that I could not seem to understand. Most times, I stayed up studying for tests until three in the morning. My teacher had tests that were based on past AP exams and in order to reach the highest score, a five, you usually needed to get a minimum percentage of seventy percent.…

The communicator style that is a fit for me is the sensor style because I do stay on point with the message and elaborate on the goals for the organization and team. One of the traits that I possess is that I am results-driven and detailed-oriented with communication and the action that supports the message. The expectations are the same for the team and we will build the team around these and several other traits and styles. The sensor is conscientious and will observe others sometimes before making a conscious decision. Not all learning styles can fit into a specific situation, there are times when a kinesthetic style is better than an aural. By becoming proficient in all learning styles, I would become flexible in all learning situations. The student should be able to shift towards the professors teaching styles in addition to exceling in their learning environment. Now, I work the best with the aural, kinesthetic, and read/write learning styles, with the weakest like being the visual learning style. By taking the content learned to the next level by shifting it across learning styles, I would gain a greater understanding towards it.…

I take a lot of notes in most of my lectures so when I am studying for an exam I can see what topics the professor focused a lot on. This helps me see what main points I need to study and what minor points I can skim over. I used this skill on my last exam and it helped me get a better grade than I expected. Looking at the test questions for clues helps me understand what the question is focusing on so I can remember the exact topic and hopefully pick the correct answer. I have used this skill throughout high school and even in college.…
