What happens when the symptoms from a disorder can be applied to most people in the world? There are multiple disorders which people inaccurately diagnose someone as having because of the preconceived notions they have regarding that particular disease. Someone sees someone being moody one day and happy the next and he or she automatically says “Oh that person is bipolar”. Or a friend seems a little sad and the conclusion becomes “They must be depressed”. Another commonly diagnosed disorder is ADHD. Most people at some point in the life have experienced symptoms common of ADHD, such as not paying attention at school, being bored easily or “zoning out” during a conversation. However, there is much more to this disorder than “zoning out” and the issues are much deeper for a person who truly suffers from ADHD.
The consequence of these symptoms can have a major impact on a person’s relationship, their schoolwork, the workplace or their home. According to the ADHD Institute (2016), adolescents with ADHD could have trouble focusing on lessons at school, which could negatively affect their grades. For an adult they might have difficulty with keeping appointments or continuously forgetting to pay the bills. (ADHD Institute, 2016). According to psychologist Ben Martin (2016), “a child with ADHD is four times as likely to have had a relative who was also diagnosed with ADHD”. However, on the flip side there are reports, which suggest other causes. A study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry found that both inherited and noninherited factors contribute to the cause of ADHD (Thapar, Cooper, Eyre, Langley, 2012).
