High school relationships were the real deal though. People themselves have matured and so had everyone else in the school, hopefully. In my science class my freshman year, there was a new boy in it. He was cute in my opinion, and it seemed like he thought the same thing about me. Talking to him in person was a BIG no go though. I was shy around new people, and I still am today. The first time we ever hung out was at a movie with two of our friends. I can still remember what movie we went to go see. With boys comes drama though. There has been ups and downs, yet through all of them I have learned valuable lessons that I will take with me as I go off to college. I tried to challenge myself each year in a different way, being able to look back and reflect on them is a great way to see how far I’ve come since that first day as a freshman on crutches nervous as all get-out to attend Auburn Riverside High School. There was an aura about the dirty park gazebo that felt like home for an angry fourteen year old. In a circle, backs pressed against cement walls, sweaty arms stuck together, was a group of kids that I found would be my family. The ground below us was covered with shards of glass and miscellaneous remnants from the night before as if to mark our territory with trash. It was a shabby old building, covered in graffiti, and it was dark after nine. But to a crowd of brooding teenagers, it was a bunker inside of a warzone: high school.…

Unfortunately, in this particular situation, I was the person who created negative communication leading to a negative relationship. My own selfishness, coupled with his misunderstanding, caused a friendship to be divided. At that point, all I was offering him was a negative relationship. According to Heath and Bryant (2000), as relational partners, “we define, negotiate, and comply with the responsibilities and limits of “paying” for what they receive from a relationship predicts the relationship’s likelihood of surviving” (p. 229). Furthermore, people negotiate the rules and requirements of each relationship using norms.…

Through my experience, my freshman and sophomore years as a musician were terrifying. On top of the shock of the new atmosphere at school, I had to play my instrument with and in front of others, which was quite a stretch for me at the time. I would always beat myself up about minute mistakes I had glorified during rehearsals, playing tests, and especially auditions. However, after I did not make an Illinois Allstate ensemble my junior year, my approach to these nerve-wracking situations completely changed. Instead of thinking failing negatively, those uncomfortable experiences actually made me improve as I had taken more auditions.…
