Distraction Or Motivation?
Is music a distraction or a motivation? Most people would say it’s motivating but some people may say it’s distracting, but why would music be considered motivating? Why would it be considered distracting? I honestly and personally think it could be both.
Listening to music in class can either affect you in a good or bad way. A couple good ways it affects you is by decreasing stress or anxiety. It states on psychcentral.com that music is connected to our emotions so it is an extremely effective way for managing stress. Of course most students would like for teachers to allow them to listen to music during class but sometimes it’s not necessarily the best choice in some occasions. Some students say they aren’t able to focus on the assignment while listening to music because it can be distracting yet some say it helps them focus on the assignment. In my own experience, music does sometimes help to get things off your mind and to just focus but when I really want to concentrate on my work or on the material, I don’t listen to music because it makes me concentrate only on the work and not the beat or the lyrics of the music. Sometimes I think the concept of being able to listen to music in class and not having your phone in class can be sometimes contradicting, some teachers don’t want to see any phones at all in their classroom where as some teachers don’t mind if you listen to music in their class. Teachers also have a perspective on letting students listening to music during class. Some teachers think that it may be a bad idea because of the fact that phones or ipods can be a distraction or having to change the song but as for other teachers they may allow students to listen to music because they understand some kids are able to focus easier and not be distracted by people when working. I think the main reason why some teachers don’t let students listen to music during class is because students do take advantage and play or text on their phones, knowing that the teacher said it was alright to have them out as long as their strictly listening to
