Is Montresor A Psychopath

"Nemo me impune lacessit." This phrase, from the story 'The Cask of Amontillado' by Edgar Allen Poe, translates into No one "cuts" (attacks) me with impunity(Vorhees, Annaliese). This basically means no one can attack me without punishment. In the story this is Montresor's family motto. Some people might say that this is something a psychopath would say. Montresor is a psychopath because, he has superficial charm, he is a pathological liar, and he is manipulative.(psychopathic)
One key point is Superficial charm. Superficial charm is the tendency to be smooth, engaging, charming, slick and verbally facile(wikipedia). In the story Montresor acts a lot like this. He is smooth when talking to Fortunato, and is very engaging. Throughout the story he keeps this charm. He is very calm when ever Fortunato says he wants to leave

To be a Pathological Liar is where you constantly lie.(pathological) Usually the person will not gain anything from the lie they told. Montresor lied throughout the whole story. He told pointless lies. And he lied constantly throughout it all. Montresor shows all of the signs of being a pathological liar.
Not only was he a pathological liar but he was also manipulative. Montresor didn't just manipulate Fortunato. To clear out his house he told the servants that he was gonna be gone till the morning and told them that they couldn't go to the celebration. This was like reverse psychology. They did the exact opposite of what he said. They thought that he wasn't gonna be back so they left to go celebrate. They did exactly what he wanted them to do. (Poe, Edgar Allen)
Some people might say that Montresor is not a psychopath. They might say this because He doesn't sleep around. But we do not know this for a fact. The story does not say that he did or did not. This reason is invalid because it can not be backed up. Yes, this is a trait of a psychopath, but they can not back this up.(Poe, Edgar

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” illustrates the wrong-doing of the character Montresor upon his friend, Fortunato, after what seems like a difference in opinions. Readers may wonder what drove Montresor to act as harshly as he did, but the reason may lie in the psychological dysfunctions imposed on his character. Montresor’s narcissistic, antisocial, and psychopathic ways led him to commit an act of murder upon Fortunato. A Narcissistic Personality Disorder is reflected through the character of Montresor.…

In the story “The Cask of Amontillado” Montresor feels the need to revenge the insult that Fortunato has inflicted on him. Most people believe that every action comes with consequences, but can someone really be to blame for their own murder? In the case of Fortunato I don’t believe he is to blame. Although Fortunato appears to be insensitive in the way he treats Montresor no insult should ever turn into murder. Montresor is to blame for Fortunato’s death because he manipulated Fortunato by using friendship, alcohol, and Fortunato’s pride against him to carry out his revenge.…

Montresor does not consider himself a despicable man as he notes “You, who so well know the nature of my soul” (Poe, para. 1). However, because his patience has already run thin he can’t bear the abuse anymore. The following lines illustrate this idea, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe, para. 1). It seems to me that Montresor is a good man who has been enduring the abuse of Fortunato for an extensive time. After reaching his limit, Montresor believes that he is entitled to carry out revenge without facing punishment since he has the worthy purpose of restoring fairness.…

(Jacoby)” Montresor manipulated Fortunato into thinking he was a friend of his and continued to go to great lengths to fulfill his deceitful plans of vengeance. Montresor is a very intriguing character who seems to have multiple personas throughout the short story. At first Montresor convinces the reader that he has the right to punish Fortunato for his wrong doing, but when Montresor lacks to explain exact details of these “injuries” it becomes clear to the reader that Montresor is an extremely unstable narrator, who just doesn’t seem to have a sense of reason or forgiveness. Montresor verbally, physically, and mentally tortured Fortunato with his lack of rational behavior that exempted him of all logical reasoning and justification of the dispute and miscommunication between the two characters. The outcome of Montresors revenge was extremely daunting; he exposed himself to be a very deceitful and a demented…
