Is Money Really the Root of All Evil? In 1st Timothy 6:10, Timothy says, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (New International Version) In modern times, this is likely known as the popular adage, “Mo’ money, mo’ problems”. The question remains, however, if this idea is really true. An argument can be made that for the people who are truly rich, who have no debt or credit issues, life is glorious. It is safe to say that because money seems to solve so many of life’s problems, many people would rather be rich and unhappy than be poor and happy. We should examine, however, whether it is true that the benefits of being rich outweigh happiness.
In truth, there are few genuinely rich people in the world. Being labeled as a billionaire on paper does not necessarily mean that a person actually has a billion dollars tangibly. There are many people who can claim a great deal of wealth on paper, but find themselves to be what is known as “cash poor,” meaning, they may have many houses and lands, but have difficulty finding cash to live an every day existence. Such a person, while appearing to be rich, may end up having a very stressful life because they want to maintain the appearance of being rich, and spend a great deal of their time focused on maintaining or getting more wealth.
