Is Macbeth the true villain Gautama Buddha, the ancient monk who founded buddhism from 500 B.C, once said , “ It is a man 's own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways”. This quote best relates to the evil and the reasoning behind that Macbeth is the true villain because Macbeth made his own choice not the witches or Lady Macbeth which Buddha’s quote states perfectly; that a man decides whether he or she becomes evil. Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a play that follows our main character, Macbeth, as he learns that he will be Thane of Cawdor and then King of Scotland. Macbeth is the true villain because of how Macbeth reacted to the witches prophecy. As Macbeth was giving in to Lady Macbeth’s insults for being too cowardly to take the crown, he timidly says, “I am settled and bond up. Each corporal agent to the courageous feat. Away and mock the time with fairest show” ( I. vii. 95-5). Clearly Macbeth chose to surrender to Lady Macbeth’s taunts by his own free will; this makes Macbeth the true villain. After the entire debate between macbeth and Lady Macbeth, Macbeth gives in and kills Duncan according to his own free will. Since he killed Duncan, even under the influence of another, Macbeth still acted according to his own free will and thereby is the true villain in the scene. After Macbeth kills Duncan, he decided it was best to kill Banquo because of the part of the witches prophecy where Banquo’s heirs will succeed Macbeth. When he met with the murderers to persuade them that Banquo was a common enemy, he says, “Both of you know Banquo is your enemy” (III. i. 25). Macbeth not only decided to kill banquo and his innocent son, Fleance, Macbeth influenced others to kill for him by twisting the murderer’s view of Banquo. This shows Macbeth’s ruthlessness and his evil nature thereby strengthening his place as the true villain in the play. Throughout the play, Macbeth showed significant signs that his conscience became corrupted and grew smaller as he committed more nefarious deeds. He not only killed innocent people; he also ordered entire families killed by other people. After the murders and during the end of the play, Macbeth even refused to face Malcolm and became stubborn bringing about his death which led to him not to care about the death of his wife. The action was also another demonstration of how Macbeth was the true villain as he showed no remorse even for the death of his wife. Evil is in everybody; however it is the actions we care out that make us truly evil or benevolent. Macbeth killed a lot of people and even though he was under considerate influence under people and prophecies, he was still guilty. So if Macbeth was not influenced by the prophecies or people like Lady Macbeth; Would he have been a better person? Or would he have been the true villain one way or
