Lord of the Flies is an interesting and engaging story that one cannot help but read. The story actually has a deeper meaning when the reader looks into it. It has many hidden meanings throughout the book. There are many references to religion, politics, and society. The character development and conflicts in the story grab the reader’s attention. The plot fits the story perfectly, making the book still relevant today. Each character brings something different to the table, adding more to the plot of the story. There are two main conflicts going on throughout the book, which is evil versus good. The island is shaped like a boat, which could be compared to Noah’s ark. The island symbolizes the Garden of Eden, which is a place corrupted by evil. The island was once beautiful but turns into a terrifying place. The “beast” represents evil. It is the snake in the garden which makes the boys violent. Since there are no rules, the boys start to hurt and kill each other. Jack is savage and irrational. He has the desire to kill. He wants to bring evil to the island. The reader could say that Jack symbolizes Judas because of his betrayal to the good of mankind. He ignores Ralph’s rules and refuses his ideas, only thinking about himself. The pig’s head, “lord of the flies,” represents the devil himself, promoting evil among the group of boys, causing them to sin. The boys represent humanity. Simon has characteristics that represent Jesus. He cares about others and tries to bring everybody together. When Simon hallucinates and communicates with the pig’s head swarming with flies, it represents Jesus confronting Satan when he left for forty nights and forty days. The pig’s head threatens Simon to run off and play or else there will be consequences, just like Satan told Jesus to enjoy life and not worry about anything.
