Shakespeare’s play ‘Macbeth’ explores the reason why a worthy man can become corrupted. Macbeth was strongly influenced by the witches and Lady Macbeth. They inspire him to seek power and they provoked him to pursue his ambition. Despite, Lady Macbeth and the witches influence, Macbeth is ultimately responsible for his moral decline and self-destruction.
The witches were partly to blame for Macbeth self-destruction. Lady Macbeth is portrayed as a strong and determined woman in act 1. Lady Macbeth is also very confident and persuasive character. Lady Macbeth is ‘quench’d’ with ‘fire’ as she is determined to have Macbeth kill Duncan and become king. Macbeth has doubts about kill Duncan and he thinks he may fail. Despite what he thinks lady Macbeth changed his mind completely as he had decided he would ‘proceed no further with this business’. She persuades him by questioning his manhood and saying he looked ‘green and pale’ meaning he was sick and weak. She made the plan for killing Duncan and made it seem straight forward and that they ‘will not fail’. At the beginning of the play Macbeth is a ‘brave’, ‘valiant’ and a ‘worthy gentleman.’ Who later get described as a ‘dead butcher.’ Macbeth started his own downfall by lettering the witches’ prophecy get to him that he will ‘be king hereafter’ and thane of Cawdor. Macbeth miss interprets and believes the prophecies with no proof. After lady Macbeth heard the parental she took it on bored and persuaded Macbeth to kill Duncan to become king! Macbeths ‘vaulting ambition’ was ignited even further by lady Macbeth and the witches. After Macbeth killed Duncan he thought he was all ready to ‘blood stepp’d (and) so far that (he) wade no more, return was as tedious as go o’er’. Once Macbeth went down the path of destruction there was no point stopping because what was done had already been done and he could not change that. For these reasons Macbeth mostly responsible for his downfall and it was his choice to under taking the murders of Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff
