Kahoot is an effective online resource that encourages student participation by engaging them in online quizzes, discussion forums, and or online surveys. For the purpose of this project, I will focus on the quiz option in Kahoot.
Kahoot is a game based learning platform located on the World Wide Web. Soundness of Pedagogy
Kahoot aligns well with the constructivism learning theory in that it allows for active learning. When used in an online virtual classroom (Blackboard, Collaborate, OMNI) this activity combines online chats, email exchange, and group/social activities. Facilitators can be as actively involved as they wish. Facilitators can control the advancement of the frames, see the high and low scores, and see the questions that are most difficulty. Facilitators have total control of the learning environment and can allow time for reflection, questions, and discussions.
When using this website with Blackboard, Collaborate, and OMNI, the challenges and technical glitches are minimal as long as all attendees have access to the internet. Even if participants have slow internet connectivity, the questions will not advance to the next screen until all contributors have responded. When I consider reflection and communication, it brings to mind the ability to meet all learning styles. One of the most attractive features is Kahoot’s ability to accommodate all learning styles; colourful web design where all questions are displayed on the screen (visual learners); upbeat music and provides learners the ability to read each question (audio learners); question answers are selected by users clicking the mouse or using the appropriate buttons on their phone (kinesthetic learners). “Some people respond strongly to visual triggers, others to auditory or kinaesthetic ones.” (Kop 2010, p.4)
Learning preferences are diverse therefore, it is vital to incorporate a variety of triggers to suit different learning styles. In addition, visualisation can be used as a tool to communicate concepts, or to represent information in understandable ways.
