Caesar believes that honor comes from consistency and the capability of staying true to one’s word. Caesar is consistent in a way that he is not one to go back on prior decisions or change his mind frequently. Caesar even goes as far as comparing himself to a higher force of astrology saying that he is “constant as the northern star,” when refusing to change his decision about a slave's banishment from Rome (3.1.60). During this time period, flattery was not to be taken seriously and should never influence a man’s point of view. In Caesar’s mind, not being able to stick with one’s original beliefs or opinions and easily being persuaded by others into changing one’s mind are signs of weakness and do not deserve the title of an honorable man. On the other hand, Caesar does not hold up to his own standards on the Ides of march when Caesar’s wife Calpurnia had a bad dream that predicted the death of her husband if he were to arrive at the senate that day. Caesar believed that her dream was not directed at him specifically but agreed not to go into the Senate as long as it would ease her mind. But one a nobleman, Decius, shows up and begins to flatter Caesar by telling the “most mighty Caesar” how he is too brave to believe that Rome wants him dead (CITE). He begins to tell Caesar how loved he is by the commoners and how the Senate was even going “to give this day a crown to [Caesar]” (CITE). At the mention of the crown, Caesar completely abandons the idea that going into the Senate is a bad idea, and is overcome by Decius' flattery. Caesar's actions show the audience his lack of honorable, he proves himself unworthy of that title due to his inconsistency within the

The lessons of honor in Julius Caesar are still relevant today because there are many people in modern times that can be compared to Julius, Brutus, and Cassius; people that earn honor respectfully and humbly and people who earn honor through doing bad things. A modern-day Julius could be Martin Luther King, Jr., who fought for the rights of an entire community, and did not do it to be honored, but did it to provide freedom and equality for the black population. A modern-day figure who could be compared to Cassius is Lance Armstrong, who earned honor by cheating, lying, and using steroids to win multiple Tour de France bicycle races. Honor is everywhere in today’s society, and Julius Caesar can be a reflection of the many examples of honor in the…

In order to avenge Caesar, Mark Antony turns a shocked, confused crowd of mourners into an angry mob of rioters by using persuasive techniques. The main component of Antony’s speech, Pathos, appealed to the commoners by striking an emotional spot inside them, trying to turn the fickle crowd against Brutus. Antony displayed the persuasive technique of Pathos by repeating words, showing them Caesar’s body, and presenting Caesar’s will. Antony is saying since Brutus is an honorable man, does that make the rest of the men honorable as well? It's almost as if he is making the people question themselves if they can trust Brutus and the conspirators or not. Antony also brings up the repetition of the word “honorable” while talking about being raged about the actions of the conspirators, “I should do Brutus wrong, and Cassius wrong, Who, you all know, are honorable men: I will not do them wrong; I rather choose To wrong the dead, to wrong myself and you, Than I will wrong such honorable men” (3.2). Throughout this part of his funeral speech, Antony is now throwing the word honorable around like it is a word that is used on anyone. He is saying that he should do something to Brutus and Cassius for killing Caesar, but they are honorable men so he will not.…

Whether public speeches result from those such as Adolf Hitler or Martin Luther King, Jr., their remarkable ability to ignite the population persuades people to take up arms regardless of the cause. In the midst of Act III in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus and Antony both speak to the bewildered citizenry regarding Caesar’s demise. Resulting from a handful of conspirators assassinating him in the Senate, Caesar’s death sparks chaos which demands explanation. Thus, some individuals assert Brutus’ speech over Antony’s by claiming that Brutus’ effect and ability to direct his point sooner propel him higher than Antony. Unfortunately, this argument fails to acknowledge Antony’s mightier impact on the audience and his employment of a larger…
